Operations Department Overview

WRI’s network is growing rapidly and the Operations department is striving to make all global offices low risk and fully capable, enhancing their operational capabilities, through a bond of mutual and sustainable growth, a high level of collaboration with each other and ability to share knowledge across the sisterhood of offices. This will be done through establishing mutually agreed upon standards of performance, measuring the efficiency and effectiveness for the sisterhood of offices. The department strives for clear processes across the WRI network to manage and mitigate operational, personnel, financial, and political risks.

Internship Summary

As the Special Projects intern, you will work with the Financial Planning & Analysis team to help with projects including designing institutional processes that help manage growth at WRI. You will also work on adoption of processes and existing tools including Salesforce, and other Microsoft Office 365 tools including Visio, Flow and Planner. In addition, you will work with the team to research industry best practices for implementation and adoption, identify institutional uses for WRI, and help put in place monitoring and maintenance mechanisms.

You will get the opportunity to engage in institutional policy making, learning skills in designing operational systems and processes, disseminating and communicating processes internally, and setup up long-term mechanisms to sustain changes that are implemented, all under the ambit of change management. Through this opportunity, you will also learn important transferrable skills on how to collect and utilize data and analyze and present it to inform management decisions.

As a result of this internship, you will be introduced to non-profit financial management, change management, and project management, skills that will seamlessly transfer to a variety of different industries.  The position will contribute towards the larger mission of WRI by streamlining WRI processes and systems. Through the internship, you will not only work on issues in the DC office, but work alongside global offices, thereby gaining international exposure as well.

Learning Outcomes

The intern will gain experience in the following areas:                                                               

  • Learn about the breadth of different systems, processes, policies that are needed to maintain and sustain growth at an international nonprofit
  • Assist in implementing institute wide processes and special projects
  • Research best practices on instituting new policies and growth management for an international nonprofit
  • Work closely with special projects team to identify process gaps within WRI’s network
  • Help the team identify solutions to process issues, and beta test solutions within WRI’s network
  • Draft and implement dissemination strategies for process solutions that have been identified
  • Develop accountability mechanisms for processes already in place
  • Document successes and failures in implementation, dissemination, and usage to document lessons learnt and influence future use

Internship Qualifications

  • University-sponsored: You must be a current student in the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago
  • Familiarity and experience with institutional processes
  • Ability to synthesize, distill, and disseminate information
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Extremely well organized and efficient
  • Ability to work calmly and enthusiastically under high pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently as well as part of a team
  • Ability to think creatively
  • Strong oral communications skills
  • Highly responsible, self-motivated
  • Good sense of humor

Preferred qualifications

  • Knowledge of change management
  • Familiarity and experience with Salesforce or other CRM software
  • Proficiency with Office 365 Suite

General Internship Requirements

  • Applicants must have personal health insurance coverage.
  • U.S. work authorization is required for this opportunity. WRI does not sponsor interns for visas.

Compensation: University Sponsored: This position is dependent on the student receiving compensation or academic credit from their university program. WRI does not offer compensation for this internship.

Duration: This is a full-time, 12-week summer internship with start date options of May 16, June 3, or June 17, 2019, based on the student’s availability and need for the project.
