Job Summary:

The SMART (Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together) ® Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the SMART functional fitness program in accordance with VON Standards. The SMART Coordinator assesses clients for service, monitors service delivery, coordinates SMART volunteer training as required, schedules and manages SMART volunteers, and contributes to the development, evaluation and promotion of the program. The purpose of this type of programming is to enhance the functional fitness of at risk adults who otherwise might not have the opportunity to participate because of barriers of cost, limited transportation, health issues and/or lack of service meeting their ability levels. The goal of the program is to enable seniors to improve their quality of life and level independence. The Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together (SMART) ® Program was developed to expand active living opportunities for seniors rather than duplicating existing programs/services. 

Responsibilities:
  • Supervising a workforce of volunteers including training, advising, evaluating and recognition
  • Scheduling volunteers to ensure efficient delivery of exercise classes
  • Monitoring monthly attendance numbers to meet annual budget
  • Reporting statistical data as required
  • Selecting and recommending the purchase of necessary equipment and supplies
  • Promoting the SMART® exercise program in the community
  • Recruits, screens, orients, places & matches, monitors & evaluates volunteers
  • Participating at team meetings
Qualifications:
  • Regulated provider under the College of Kinesiology, College of Nurses, College of Physiotherapists, or College of Occupational Therapists an asset
  • Post-Secondary education in Health/Social Science discipline (or the equivalent combination of qualifications/education plus experience in community work and volunteer administration) 
    SFIC / VON SMART certification (or a willingness to obtain within the first 4 months of employment)
  • First Aid/CPR certification is required
  • Post secondary education in Volunteer Management or a minimum two years experience in Volunteer Leadership is an asset
  • Knowledge of and experience using and implementing falls prevention tools and education
  • Experience or understanding of the not-for-profit healthcare environment
  • Knowledge and experience in program planning and evaluation 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the social and health care services network and community resources
  • Knowledge and experience in Gerontology is an asset
  • Experience providing exercise programming for seniors is an asset
  • Community development, public speaking, fundraising and budgeting experience an asset
  • Strong time management, follow-up and organizational skills
  • Computer savvy and proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Experience with scheduling software such as Procura an asset
  • Valid Driver's license, reliable vehicle and proof of current car insurance is required
  • Current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check is required upon the start of your employment
  • A Vulnerable Sector Search and/or Child Abuse Registry Check may be required
  • Ability to speak French is an asset in French Designated areas 
Work conditions and physical demands: This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activity including lifting, carrying (using proper techniques), bending, reaching, kneeling, and other movements that emphasize good body mechanics. Individuals in the role are required to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs throughout the day, with some tasks requiring fine hand movements.
