Summary:
The Home Support Aide (HSA) provides non-personal care homemaking services to clients and families in their home according to the framework of VON policies, procedures, standards, quality & risk management and program operational guidelines and as authorized by Nova Scotia Health Continuing Care.  The HSA collaborates with members of the health care team in meeting the needs of individuals to attain an optimal level of independence and well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Adheres to the VON standards for conduct and behavior and upholds VON’s Core Values.
  • Observes and assesses the individual’s home, personal situation and client service plan.
  • Completes the environmental risk assessments.
  • Contributes to the development (with the help of the SDS/HCC Manager) of the client service plan.
  • Maintaining the focus on client independence, health status, safety and quality of life.
  • Communicates with appropriate members of the health team regarding the management of the client’s homemaking, physical, and emotional needs.
  • Performs light housekeeping for clients in their home including (not limited to) cleaning living areas, vacuuming, mopping floors, and laundry.
  • Plan, prepares and serves meals and required clean up.
  • Provides companionship and conversation to the clients.
  • Provides stabilization and assistance with walking.
External and Internal Relationships:
Engages frequently with the clients, client’s family members, SDS / HCC Manager on any needed changes to client service plans and other relevant information.
Education, Designations and Experience:
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Post-secondary school education in a relevant field preferred.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification is required.
  • Safe Food Handler and WHIMIS certification is required.
  • 2-3 years experience working with seniors and persons with disabilities preferred.
  • Household management or professional customer service experience preferred.
  • Experience working for a professional cleaning services organization preferred.
  • Experience working with people from different social and economic environments preferred.
Skill Requirements:
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Good assessment skills.
  • Awareness of community resources.
  • Ability to take direction, as well as to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to utilize technology in the workplace.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships.
  • Ability to build rapport and trust with clients through use of interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to interact with clients in a sensitive, empathic, and compassionate manner.

  • Ability to function as a team player, respecting other care providers involved in the total care plan.
  • Ability to organize and carry out tasks efficiently.
  • Ability to work independently and to respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Ability to prepare meals and complete light housekeeping and launder and put away laundry
Health and Safety:
  • As part of the care team, provides client-centered supports in line with position scope. 
  • Provides safe, competent, and ethical supports.
  • Supports, protects, and safeguards the clients’ rights, dignity, and interests.
  • Demonstrates a client-focused philosophy of support.
  • Recognizes and reports any changes in client circumstance that may pose a potential or actual threat to the client’s health, safety, security, and well-being.
  • Maintains knowledge of and works in accordance with VON current policies and procedures relating to Disaster and Fire, Infection Control, Occupational Health and Safety, WHMIS, etc.
  • As part of the care team, maintains knowledge of and demonstrates the safe use and care of equipment and supplies in the provision of client supports.
Other:
  • Must have personal reliable vehicle and possess both a current driver’s license and proof of vehicle insurance.
  • Willingness to travel within the Site service area
  • A current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Child Abuse Registry Check is required
  • A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Search may be required
  • Flexibility to work days, evenings, and weekends.
  • The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) maybe required
