About the Department
The Public Affairs Department consists of NYRR’s Media and Public Relations, Government Relations and Community Engagement teams. Media and Public Relations share the stories of NYRR participants, events, and programs to drive awareness to NYRR’s organization and mission, while also enhancing and protecting the company’s reputation. Government Relations & Community Engagement manages NYRR's relationships with local and state elected officials, and governmental agencies, as well as its relationships with community stakeholders, from our runners and clubs to like-minded organizations. Overall, representing NYRR's interests, Public Affairs serves as a centralized bridge and internal partner for the organization and governmental and community partners.
About the Position
Reporting to the Director of Public Relations—with indirect reporting into the Chief Communications Officer and the Head of Public Relations—the Public Relations Coordinator will join the department seasonally, ahead of and during the TCS New York City Marathon, from July through the end of November. In this role, working 15-40 hours/week with hours increasing as the Marathon approaches on Sunday, Nov. 1, the Public Relations Coordinator role will be responsible for monitoring media coverage and drafting coverage reports, drafting media materials, and supporting the public relations team across TCS New York City Marathon initiatives, programs, race-week events, race-day operations, and other events/initiatives as needed.
Job Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties):
Lead media coverage monitoring & reporting related to New York Road Runners and the TCS New York City Marathon, including tracking stories via search engines and monitoring tools, clipping media coverage, and producing coverage updates/reports
- Support the development and distribution of media materials, including press releases, media advisories, event briefs/talking points, scripts, bios, pitches, fact sheets, timelines, and the TCS New York City Marathon Media Guide
- Assist with in-person / on-site media operations during the New Balance 5th Avenue Mile, TCS New York City Marathon race week, and TCS New York City Marathon race day. Responsibilities include but are not limited to media check-in, interview staffing, photo/video coordination, and responding to media inquiries
Job Requirements:
Experience:
1-2 years of experience in the Media and Public Relations industry preferred
- Experience with nonprofit, community, sports or events-based organizations a plus
Education & Certifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in English, Public Relations, communications, journalism or related field preferred
Skills and Attributes:
- Exceptional written and verbal communications skills
- A collaborator with strong project management skills
- Self-motivated with strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent creative and critical thinking skills
- Strong ability to multitask, meet and perform under tight deadlines, think clearly under pressure, and exercise good judgment
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
- Experience with media monitoring tools (Meltwater, Google Alerts, Muck Rack) is a plus
- Strong attention to detail
- Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Other Requirements:
- Ability to work weekends and nights as required
- Passion for New York Road Runners’ mission is a plus
Salary:
$30/hour (Overtime Eligible)
