About the Office
The role of the Legal and Governance Team is to provide, promote and support good governance and decision-making across the University and support statutory, regulatory, and legislative compliance obligations.
About the role
The Senior Legal Counsel provides expert, high-quality, and strategically aligned legal advice to key stakeholders at the University, across a broad spectrum of complex commercial, employment, privacy, governance, and regulatory matters within the higher education sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert strategic legal advice on complex issues, including those related to employment, property, corporate governance, privacy, intellectual property, and dispute resolution.
- Contribute to the running of the legal function of the university, including the development of legal strategies in responding to litigation, government interventions and compliance requirements.
- Draft, negotiate, and review a wide range of legal agreements and documents.
- Advise on legislative compliance specific to corporations and institutions of Higher Education, including the Higher Education Standards Framework, privacy laws, workplace laws, and other regulations affecting the sector.
- Advise on appropriate policies and procedures for the University to ensure that the University complies with all legal and ethical obligations
Qualifications, skills & experience
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB)
- A current legal practicing certificate.
- Extensive post-admission experience (minimum 7 PQE), including significant expertise in commercial law, intellectual property, and regulatory compliance.
- Demonstrated experience providing legal advice in a complex, regulated environment.
- In-depth knowledge of legislation regulations, and case law relevant to the higher education sector, including employment law, privacy law, and corporate governance.
- Experience working in a University or higher-tier firm highly valued
