Chief Audience Officer 
New York Public Radio (NYPR), home to WNYC, Gothamist, WQXR, WNYC Studios and The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space, is seeking an exceptional, results-oriented Chief Audience Officer (CAO) to lead the strategy and execution for NYPR’s audience development, product and platform development, brand management, and audience and market intelligence.

In partnership with the other senior leaders, the CAO will be responsible for building sustainable growth and loyalty across NYPR’s broadcast signals, podcasts, websites, newsletters, live events and social channels, helping position the organization at the forefront of New York’s media ecosystem and the public radio network as a whole. 
The CAO is the primary architect of the audience journey across NYPR’s many properties through a wide and growing range of established and evolving platforms. They will provide vision and leadership to teams charged with developing, implementing and measuring strategies around audience development and audience intelligence, brand, marketing, media and public relations, as well as the design, testing, development and ongoing support of NYPR’s suite of digital platforms, products and tools. They will apply a rigorous understanding of audience behaviors and expectations and an alertness to the accelerating changes in the media marketplace to devise strategies and tactics that leverage NYPR’s distinctive programming, talent, products and partnerships to grow, engage and activate existing and new audiences, on whatever devices and channels they find us, in New York and beyond. 
Reporting to the CEO, the CAO will be a dynamic and accomplished professional with exceptional leadership, communication and collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization, with the NYPR Board of Trustees, and with partners throughout the media and technology landscape. They will be a proven leader with strategic thinking abilities, strong management skills, demonstrated success in developing and executing marketing and audience development initiatives with a collaborative approach, and the personal integrity, agility and drive to motivate others and to mentor and rally teams to achieve exceptional results. In addition, this executive is a key leader in helping to build a people-centered workplace culture that is diverse and inclusive. They will be experienced and effective in bridging teams, processes and brands that range from legacy broadcast platforms to cutting-edge technologies, and accomplished and skillful in furthering the digital transformation of the organization.The Chief Audience Officer will have a total team of about 20 – 25 people.  
Responsibilities 
  • Leads our plans to grow the size and diversity and deepen the engagement of NYPR’s audiences, particularly across both owned-and-operated and partner digital platforms.  
  • Develops and drives a cohesive audience strategy with the goal of increasing brand awareness and audience growth, acquisition and retention. 
  • In collaboration with the CEO and Executive Leadership Team, sets overall organizational audience development goals. Sets, oversees and reports audience, brand, and product development KPIs and dashboards for strategic and tactical decision making, to ensure performance is on track and regularly communicates metrics to key stakeholders across the business. 
  • As leader of the Product, Design and Engineering team, shapes and manages execution of the digital roadmap for the organization, ensuring the successful design, testing, delivery, optimization and quality of a suite of best-in-class consumer experiences across the web, mobile devices, connected cars, voice-activated devices and other platforms and surfaces. 
  • Serves as the primary steward for the NYPR portfolio of brands. Ensures clear and consistent identity and messaging across the consumer-facing brands (WNYC, Gothamist, WNYC Studios, WQXR, and The Greene Space). 
  • Champions the adoption and application of agile principles of digital program management, product, design and technical development, with the goal of maximizing speed and efficiency of work cycles and optimizing the ratio of innovation and new development to systems maintenance and servicing of technical debt. 
  • Ensures that marketing, platform and product are aligned to achieve membership and broader fundraising company goals. 
  • Builds and supports high-performance marketing, audience, data intelligence, product, design and engineering teams to help NYPR effectively deliver on its mission across both the radio and digital worlds. 
  • In partnership with the Executive Leadership Team, develops and manages the programming promotion calendar ensuring the right levels of promotion support for programs and initiatives consistent with NYPR strategic priorities. 
  • Oversees strategic PR and communications plans that underscore and clearly communicate NYPR’s unique value proposition. 
  • Ensures the stability, efficiency and scalability of the technical infrastructure for NYPR’s digital distribution platforms, including content management systems, analytics tools, hosting services and development environments. 
  • Effectively manages and organizes the division’s day-to-day operations and budgets, processes and procedures. 
  • Actively participates in the continued organizational objective to create a healthy, vibrant culture of diversity, inclusion, personal and professional accountability.

Qualifications 
  • A deep appreciation and passion for the mission and aspirations of NYPR. 
  • At least 15 years of progressive experience that demonstrates ability to lead functions that combine digital product, engineering, design and marketing strategies and operations within the context of a legacy media company. 
  • Experience with news, journalism or content-based businesses is a plus. 
  • Team player with proven ability to collaborate with colleagues across functional areas. 
  • Deep understanding of the methods of attracting and acquiring new audiences and deepening engagement with them.  
  • Fluency and foresight with disruptive technologies, from new modes of audio distribution to artificial intelligence, and the ability to help shape NYPR’s strategies for adapting to them. 
  • A strong strategic thinker who champions the use of quantitative and qualitative data to measure and improve the performance of various audience, product and marketing initiatives and activities. 
  • A demonstrated willingness to experiment, test and learn in order to grow new audiences and attract members and donors with initiatives, campaigns and tools.  
  • Proven ability to build a cohesive, high-performing staff and teams and to develop the skills and nurture the growth of staff members.

Additional Information    
This is a full-time role with a salary range of $280,000-$340,000 per year (plus a full benefits package). Salary offered within this range is determined by skills, experience and organizational pay equity. New York Public Radio offers excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance, vacation, personal and sick time as well as inclusive family leave.    
 
This role operates in a hybrid capacity, with the ability to sometimes work from home. However, this position is part of the NYC staff and will be expected to work from the NYC office on specified days with regularity.
