About the Role
New York Public Radio is looking for a Chief Product Officer to lead the product vision, strategy, design, and delivery across our suite of consumer-facing properties. This role has two key components: expanding the reach of our journalism, audio programs and music service as well as facilitating the membership programs that fund this award-winning work. The CPO will oversee every element of our digital product suite from conceptualization to launch to post- launch analysis and iteration. Reporting to NYPR’s President and CEO, this role will directly manage a team of 20+ across our product, design, software engineering, and digital operations groups. The successful candidate will work collaboratively across content, data, audience, and revenue teams to deliver the product roadmap. In addition, the CPO will work closely with their peers on the Senior Leadership team to align priorities to deliver on the organization’s audience and revenue goals. The CPO will lead the organization in defining and building our product vision and defining the culture needed to deliver that vision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the product, software engineering, design, and digital operations staff and build a culture of accountability, inclusion, positive morale, and a focus on driving results.

  • In collaboration with other members of the executive leadership team, drive creation of product vision and strategy across multiple brands and platforms. Develop detailed product roadmaps from that vision.

  • Working with the newsroom and editorial teams, present new product offerings in a way that expands the reach of our journalism to new audiences, creating customer engagement and loyalty that is the key driver of NYPR’s business model.

  • Lead the transformation of product ideas from hypotheses into actionable concepts, timelines, and projects while considering financial implications, capacity, marketing needs, and the overall objectives of the business.

  • Ensure continued audience-facing improvements, compliance, and security across our suite of products wrapped in an experience that continuously delights consumers and contributes to the sustainability of the organization.

  • Develop and mentor staff; provide regular feedback and constantly ensure improvement in professional skills and attainment of career development goals.

  • Manage stakeholder communications. Set and continually manage expectations.

  • Understand and identify the best partners in our space and work with cross-functional teams to connect our vision with those partners.

  • Own and oversee the budget for the product, engineering, and digital operations department.

  • Oversee software development life cycle processes that drive toward a scalable product portfolio that will, in-turn, drive the organization’s goals of audience growth and financial sustainability.

  • Adapt, implement, and champion current best practices in digital development methodologies (e.g., Lean, Agile, user-centered design) and, where appropriate, work with other departments to understand and embrace them.

  • Represent NYPR in collaborative discussions around digital growth and innovation with other public media organizations, including NPR and major market stations.

  • In partnership with Development department, articulate the case and advocate for investments in digital innovation and transformation with foundations and the philanthropic community.

  • Build and manage relationships with third parties across the technology, and media, as well as philanthropic landscape.

Experience & Requirements
  • Leadership experience, with a proven track record of planning and delivery innovative and high-quality digital products to consumers. Experience with subscription-based businesses and fluency in digital marketing, advertising, newsletters, and SEO are a plus.

  • Previous experience managing software engineering, product management, and product design functions, under both Agile and waterfall methodologies, with a proven ability to collaborate with and motivate cross-functional teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to attract top talent and build and develop high performing, diverse and inclusive teams.

  • Ability to clearly communicate and lead discussions with a broad range of stakeholders around strategy, technical architecture, data and analytics, product design, and project prioritization.

  • Deep technical understanding of web and mobile technical architecture and publishing tools along with strong experience in agile methodologies.

  • Experience weighing strategic, operational and budget factors to make and implement sound decisions around “build-vs-buy” options.

  • Previous experience in the following domains highly desirable: news media, digital audio/video, BI and analytics, subscriptions/ecommerce, and CRM.

  • Deep understanding of the mobile space and emerging devices – including consumption methods, user experiences, partners, technologies, and platforms.
