MATERIAL PLANNER

PURPOSE
The role of the Material Planner is to ensure manufacturing has all required materials needed to execute the daily production schedule. Assists Senior Material Manager in planning and purchasing of packaging and raw materials goods from approved suppliers in a manner consistent with company quality standards, delivery requirements, and desired total delivered cost. Manages vendor relationships, inventory levels and material movements. Ensures that all requirements for purchasing, storage, and transportation of materials are adhered to. Responsible for ensuring on-time delivery and adapting to new schedule requirements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS

  • Under the direction of the Senior Material Manager, order materials from approved suppliers for production based on the approved-for-purchase items in the buyer’s backlog ensuring continuous supply of materials as required by manufacturing.
  • Monitor re-order levels to ensure proper stock levels are met while not unnecessarily inflating inventory levels needed for manufacturing.
  • Assist in making sure vendors deliver on time meeting various or necessary production schedules.
  • Resolve vendor problems such as shipment schedules, missing quantities of materials and packaging, etc.
  • Monitor vendor performance to due dates proactively managing supply shortage problems.
  • Review purchased items with Quality Assurance to ensure quality of materials and ensure adherence to company specifications
  • Monitor the MRP system safety stock levels to ensure that materials and packaging are at levels needed for manufacturing.
  • Develop operational relationships with vendors.
  • Oversee the administration of purchase orders and confirmations.
  • Follow up on orders placed, verify deliveries, approve invoicing, perform price audits, and maintain necessary records.
  • Reviews age of all raw materials and takes appropriate action to work to minimize spoilage exposure associated with raw materials.
  • Create strategies to improve categories.
  • Maintain planned lead times, lot sizes, safety stock levels, delivery times and work orders, file data and all other finished goods parameters for all assigned MPS items.
  • Contact vendors in order to schedule or expedite deliveries and to resolve shortages and other problems.
  • Resolve discrepancies related to purchasing, delivery, receiving, accounts payable invoices, and payment to the supplier
  • Resolve vendor problems such as shipment schedules, missing quantities of materials and packaging, etc.
  • Assist with other tasks related to purchasing or accounting as directed.
  • Perform research and data analysis with frequent use of Excel and MRP-Horizonal.
  • Gather data and track various department metrics, such as corrective actions, inventory use, cost savings.
  • Represent the department in the absence of the Manager.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDE
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required, bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of ERP/MRP systems is required.
  • Five plus years of prior experience in the manufacturing industry preferably in frozen food.
  • Prior experience working with vendors and new product launches.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal, organizational, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Initiative, sound analytical and problem solving skills, and ability to organize work independently with a minimum of supervision.
  • Must be able to handle and safeguard confidential information and have the desire to work in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to work with all levels of employees and coordinate a variety of functions.
  • Demonstrated expertise with MS Office including Excel is essential.
