Description
Mini-Circuits designs, manufactures and distributes integrated circuits, modules, and sub-systems for high-performance radio frequency (RF) and microwave applications. The Engineering Technician builds, repairs and tests both microelectronic chip-and-wire and surface mount-based hardware using extremely small and fragile components and bare die. The candidate must have outstanding hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to install, assemble, inspect and test electronic components during product assembly, per documented work instructions. Interpreting job routers, written instructions, wiring diagrams and schematic drawings for assembly and test of electronics is a key component of this position.
- Performs assembly equipment and tooling set-up, calibration and preventative maintenance (epoxy dispenser, wire bonder, soldering irons, ovens, etc.).
- Kits bill of materials as required per assembly diagram and instructions.
- Performs manual die attach of bare die MMICs, chip capacitors and other micro-electronic components using electrically conductive epoxies. Dispenses epoxy using both manual techniques and a dispensing machine.
- Performs wire bonding tasks using a variety of wire and ribbon sizes and both ball and wedge-based techniques.
- Reads and works from assembly drawings and provides markups with improvements/design changes when necessary.
- Performs daily bond-pull verification to qualify machines.
- Performs welding operations using a gap welder.
- Performs tacking operations using a thermosonic bonder.
- Performs soldering tasks with small components and micro-soldering irons.
- Performs delicate rework tasks while minimizing collateral damage.
- Assists with troubleshooting a unit by inspection. Performs self-inspections to ensure assemblies meet/exceed IPC standards.
- Continuously performs visual inspections of materials for defects and conducts any range of functional tests and cleaning at prescribed intervals to ensure proper operation of various components during assembly.
- Modifies, reworks and/or repairs assemblies and subassemblies according to specifications, drawings, and work instructions.
- Maintains work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition and follows prescribed safety procedures. Assists other staff with keeping the lab clean.
- Set up and operate equipment for electrical testing of RF components.
- Other duties as assigned by Lead or Supervisor.

- High School Diploma, GED or international equivalent.
- Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering or similar field of study preferred but not required.
- Minimum 5 years of micro-assembly experience with both chip-and-wire and miniature surface mount (0201 size and smaller) components.
- RF and DC test equipment maintenance and troubleshooting capability; ability to calibrate and use a Vector Network Analyzer, Spectrum Analyzer, Signal Source, and Power Meter a plus.
- Background in precision mechanical assembly and low volume, complex manufacturing processes; experience in lean manufacturing, 6S and continuous improvement a plus.
- IPC-610, J-STD-001 and 7711/7721 certification preferred.
- Knowledge of ESD (Electrostatic discharge) procedures.
- Practical knowledge in the test and measurement of MMIC products including mixers and amplifiers.
- Hands-on experience with assembly, tuning, testing and troubleshooting hardware in a laboratory environment; experience utilizing a probe station a plus.
- Set up, operate, calibrate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair assembly equipment and tooling such as manual and auto epoxy dispensing systems, wire bonder machine, reflow ovens, soldering and rework stations, wire pull, die shear, measuring and inspection microscope, laser marking and laser trimming.
- Ability to read, write and orally communicate in English.
- Ability to utilize electronic work instructions, read and interpret an assembly drawing.
- Ability to sit at a bench for an extended period of time.
- Proficiency in MS Office systems.
