Description
Director of Product Platforms
Only candidates local to the Chicagoland area will be considered
Hybrid: In Office Every Thursday in Elmhurst, IL Required
The Director of Product Platforms will be responsible for defining the vision, strategy, and roadmap across three shared products and the service lines they enable. They will balance competing business priorities, translate market, customer, operational, and economic needs into a cohesive portfolio strategy, and lead the product operating model, including discovery, prioritization, roadmap planning, product reviews, outcome measurement, and release readiness. They will also build and develop a high-performing product organization while connecting product investments to revenue growth, customer retention, service quality, operational efficiency, cost-to-serve, and margin.
- Set and evangelize a product strategy that connects company strategy, service-line growth, customer needs, operations, technology, and economics.
- Create a transparent portfolio prioritization framework that makes hard trade-offs explicit and prevents the loudest stakeholder from becoming the roadmap.
- Identify capabilities that should be built once and reused across service lines versus capabilities that should remain differentiated by business.
- Partner daily with the Director of Engineering to create a high-throughput product and engineering system that balances speed, quality, reliability, architecture, and technical debt.
- Get close to customers, operators, dispatchers, drivers, and frontline users; validate problems before committing significant teams or capital.
- Translate operational workflows into product opportunities, with particular attention to routing, scheduling, scanning, hand-offs, exceptions, chain-of-custody, SLA performance, and cost-to-serve.
- Bring product leadership into Sales, Business Development, Partnerships, RFPs, customer strategy, and executive customer conversations - while maintaining disciplined commitments.
- Make sound build / buy / partner / configure decisions and distinguish true strategic differentiation from commodity capability.
- Establish outcome metrics and product analytics that move the organization from output reporting to evidence-based investment decisions.
- Represent Product to the executive team and Board with a clear point of view, business case, trade-offs, and measurable outcomes.
Additional Skills Required
- Portfolio & Platform Strategy - Thinks in portfolios rather than isolated products. Understands shared platforms, product-line architecture, capability reuse, dependencies, sequencing, and capital allocation across competing businesses.
- Product & Business Strategy - Connects market opportunity, customer problems, operating model, economics, technology, and company strategy into a coherent product thesis.
- Operational & Workflow Fluency - Understands physical operations and failure modes. Can move from customer need to workflow, exception, system behavior, and measurable business outcome.
- Prioritization & Judgment - Makes clear trade-offs with incomplete information. Knows when to optimize, experiment, simplify, partner, or say no.
- Commercial & Unit-Economics Fluency - Understands revenue, retention, expansion, margin, cost-to-serve, pricing, implementation economics, and the financial consequences of product decisions.
- Technical & Integration Fluency - Comfortable with APIs, enterprise integrations, data models, mobile/web applications, SaaS architecture, security, data platforms, and technical debt. Can make credible technical trade-offs without being the architect.
- Customer & Market Discovery - Excellent at strategic and tactical discovery; able to engage executives, operational users, frontline workers, and partners and synthesize their needs without simply serving the loudest voice.
- Product Organization Leadership - Builds a strong PM organization and operating system: hiring, coaching, career development, product rituals, standards, and accountability.
- Executive Influence - Can align executives, service-line leaders, Commercial, Operations, Engineering, and customers around a decision - including when the answer is not now.
- Systems Thinking - Sees the chain from product decision to operational behavior to customer experience to revenue and margin. Optimizes the system, not an individual feature or team.
- Dual-Mode Operating - Runs Core and growth lines differently while keeping a coherent strategy, architecture, and portfolio discipline.
- Data & Decision Intelligence - Uses operational data, analytics, forecasting, optimization, and automation to improve decisions and identify scalable product opportunities.
Skills for Success
- 10+ years in product management, with meaningful experience leading PMs / Senior PMs
- Strong B2B / enterprise product experience in a complex operating environment.
- Experience standing up, scaling, or materially transforming a product organization rather than only managing an established function.
- Evidence of commercial accountability - revenue, retention, expansion, cost, margin, or other meaningful business outcomes.
- Executive presence: credible with senior executives and customers while still able to go deep with product and engineering teams.
- Demonstrated ownership of a platform or portfolio that serves multiple customers, business units, or workflows with competing needs.
- Experience managing multiple products or product teams that share technology and engineering capacity.
- A track record translating strategy into roadmaps and roadmaps into shipped, measurable outcomes.
- Experience partnering deeply with engineering and making sound trade-offs involving architecture, integrations, technical debt, reliability, and delivery capacity.
- Strong judgment in build / buy / partner / configure decisions and in identifying where differentiation creates durable value.
