A day in the life…
 
Wondering what a day in the life of a Certified Dermatology Tech at The Iowa Clinic might look like?
 
Certified Dermatology Technologist performs duties related to direct patient care in dermatology. Duties include, but are not limited to, rooming patients in examination rooms, obtaining pertinent medical history information, entering information into the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR), assisting providers (physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant) as directed in patient examination, participating in patient education, processing and/or ordering laboratory or other testing and scheduling procedures as appropriate.  
 
 Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates ability to consistently meet work schedule demands in the clinic.
  • Performs duties associated with direct patient care.
    • Receives patients according to scheduled appointment, escorts patient to examination room, obtains pertinent medical history information, takes vitals and enters information into patient’s electronic medical record (EMR). Anticipates equipment/supply needs for patient examination.
    • Assists providers as directed in patient examination and while performing procedures.
    • Performs duties associated with patient education including, but not limited to, review and explanation of patient tests, procedures, diagnoses, signs/symptoms, expectations, complications, outcomes, medication actions/reactions, etc.
    • Receives and returns telephone calls from/to patients, pharmacies and/or referring medical office personnel responding to inquiries as appropriate or seeking assistance from physician/RN to assure proper information is given.
    • Unpacks and organizes sample medications and supplies. Restocks supplies in examination rooms and supply rooms, disposing of contaminated, disposable or outdated items in accordance with office policy. Checks expiration dates and removes outdated sample medications.
    • Cleans examination rooms between patients, utilizing appropriate cleaning policies and procedures. Gathers dirty linen for laundry, unpacks clean linen and stocks exam rooms appropriately.
  • Orders medical supplies as appropriate.
  • Verifies that EMR contains necessary information for each patient for scheduled visit.
  • Assists with medical record requests and discerns which requests need to be sent to
  • Support Services and which requests need to be fulfilled by the department. Completes
  • process for medical record requests that need to be fulfilled by the department. Maintains records relating to medical record requests.
  • Maintains awareness of own safety in carrying out duties and responsibilities. Adheres to
  • universal precautions and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Assumes accountability for enhancing own knowledge through professional associations,
  • journals, workshops, in-services, etc. Keeps certification/licensure current.
  • Promotes positive interpersonal relations with all personnel. Promotes a positive,
  • professional image of The Iowa Clinic, both internally and externally, through
  • demonstration of respect, compassion and positive interpersonal relations with all patients,
  • patients’ families, personnel, physicians, referring physician office personnel, and all other
  • external customers.
  • Follows HIPAA guidelines to maintain confidentiality of all patient information and uses
  • discretion in patient interactions. Maintains confidentiality of corporate financial information.
  • Demonstrates teamwork by maintaining awareness of workload of co-workers and offering
  • assistance to co-workers as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates responsible utilization of supplies and materials; treats property of company
  • and others with respect; and creatively look for opportunities to reduce costs.
  • Shares responsibility for keeping work and patient areas clean, neat and professional in
  • appearance.
  • Performs other tasks assigned with a willing and cheerful spirit.
  • Demonstrates professionalism through use of appropriate language, appropriate
  • professional apparel and appearance, and utilization of lunch break periods for personal business.
  • Completes required OSHA on-line training in a timely manner.
  • Maintains awareness of workload of co-workers and helps as appropriate.
  • Keeps own work areas clean, neat and professional in appearance.
  • Attends department staff meetings and all in-service programs as required.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
Minimum Job Qualifications
Education: Graduate of Certified Dermatology Tech program.
Licensure/ Certification: Certification from the Association of Certified Dermatology Techs (ACDT);
Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and State of Iowa Mandatory Reporter Certification required.
Work Experience: One year experience in a dermatology clinic setting preferred.
