The Position

The Ability Management Specialist partners with key business leaders across the company and is responsible for the strategic and operational management of Gateway’s occupational and non-occupational absence, ability, and accommodation programs. 

This position will use their knowledge and expertise to provide leadership, guidance, and case management support for workplace injury and illness claims, as well as to coordinate safe, sustainable stay-at-work and return-to-work initiatives. The Specialist also oversees workplace accommodations, and contributes to effective attendance management practices. 

The focus of this role is to build position ability and absence management as a competitive advantage by developing and enhancing programs, systems, resources, and education, while driving the implementation of effective and compliant case and claims management practices. 

Gateway has evolved its approach from traditional disability management towards a broader Ability Management framework focused on employee outcomes, inclusion, and sustainable work. In this role, you will support occupational and non-occupational absence, ability, and accommodation programs (often referred to in the industry as disability management and return-to-work programs).

Key Responsibilities 

  • Lead full-cycle return-to-work case management for occupational and non-occupational claims
  • Develop and implement stay-at-work and return-to-work plans that prioritize safe, timely reintegration
  • Manage workplace accommodations, including complex cases involving mental health, wellness, and physical limitations
  • Partner with leaders to provide guidance on attendance management, accommodations, and employee absence issues
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers, insurers (WSIB/WCB), and internal teams to support recovery and clarify restrictions
  • Support and facilitate attendance management programs and meetings
  • Identify trends and recommend proactive strategies to improve outcomes and reduce claim duration and costs
  • Maintain accurate documentation, reporting, and case tracking
  • Contribute to training and education on return-to-work and accommodation best practices
  • Work closely with Health & Safety to align prevention strategies with claims trends

What You Bring  

  • 2–3+ years of return-to-work case management experience (occupational & non-occupational)
  • Proven experience managing workplace accommodations, including mental health and wellness cases
  • Knowledge of WSIB/WCB processes, disability management, and return-to-work best practices
  • Solid understanding of applicable legislation (Human Rights, Occupational Health & Safety, Employment Standards)
  • Post-secondary education in HR, Disability Management, Health Sciences, or related field
  • Strong ability to act as a trusted advisor to leaders
  • Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and relationship-building skills
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple cases and priorities
  • Certifications such as CDMP or CRTWC are an asset
