Excel Academy is a network of 5 schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island that prepares students in grades 5-12 to succeed in high school and college and engage productively in their communities. About the Role
The Food Service Worker plays a vital role in supporting the health and well-being of students by preparing and serving nutritious meals in a safe, clean, and welcoming environment. This team member ensures efficient kitchen operations and compliance with food safety standards while contributing to a positive school culture.
 
Hours: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM (on school days only, August – June)
 
Salary and Start Date: $19.35 - $23.20 per hour. The ideal candidate would start on August 10, 2026.
 
Duties & Responsibilities
Excel Academy is seeking a Food Service Worker to:
  • Prepare and serve breakfast and/or lunch in alignment with established menus and procedures
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the kitchen, serving areas, and storage spaces.
  • Follow all local, state, and federal food safety and sanitation regulations.
  • Receive and properly store food deliveries and kitchen supplies
  • Monitor inventory levels and support basic tracking of food and materials
  • Ensure proper food storage and handling procedures are followed
  • Operate kitchen equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ensure compliance with school nutrition program requirements and portion guidelines.
  • Support meal setup, service, and cleanup in a timely manner.
  • Lift and transport food, supplies, and equipment as needed.
  • Collaborate with school staff to ensure smooth daily operations.
  • Foster a welcoming and respectful environment for students and colleagues

Qualifications
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physical tasks.
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and food safety.
  • Preferred:
    • Prior experience in food service, school nutrition programs, or commercial kitchens.
    • Knowledge of food safety standards and sanitation procedures.
    • Experience working in a school, nonprofit, or community-based setting
    • ServSafe Certification (or ability to obtain within the first three months in role).
 
Preference will be given to applicants who share points of intersection with our students, such as speaking Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, or a language commonly spoken by our students and families at an advanced level, being first generation college graduates, or having grown up low-income.
