Excel Academy is a network of 5 schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island that prepares students in grades 5-12 to succeed in high school and college and engage productively in their communities. About the Role

Excel Academy Rhode Island is seeking an Athletic Director to launch and lead our founding  high school athletics program and build our existing middle school program in the 2026-2027 school year. This position is a unique opportunity to support students’ health and wellness while impacting student learning and culture on a school-wide level. Excel Academy believes that athletics programs have unique potential to drive student culture, and therefore, student learning and post-secondary outcomes. The Athletic Director  is seen as instrumental in shaping students’ high school experience through extracurriculars, athletic opportunities, and interventions for students of concern. We seek an individual with the ability to draw from our students’ lived experiences and the strengths of their communities. 


Duties/Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and oversee all athletic programs that reflect the interests and needs of our student population;
  • Actively contribute to and be a member of Excel Academy High School and Middle School teams  
  • Report to the Dean of Culture, Head of School, or Dean of Operations, and proactively collaborate with the Dean Team in planning of inclusive student life/culture programming;
  • Manage Excel’s athletic programming throughout the season, including scheduling and management of practices/games, equipment and uniform maintenance, coach recruitment, hiring, and supervision, athletic eligibility, etc.;
  • Manage Excel’s Athletics budget and grant requirements. 
  • Manage non-competitive athletic programming to support student development and physical activity before and/or after school;
  • Serve as the high school site supervisor for games and competitions; 
  • Provide coverage during instructional and non-instructional time;
  • Serve as a productive member of the Excel Academy community; and
  • Do whatever it takes to ensure the mission of the school is upheld.

Qualifications 

  • A Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred;
  • A minimum of two years of classroom or physical education teaching experience;
  • A minimum of two years of experience coaching team sports;
  • A commitment to and belief in all students and the mission of Excel Academy Charter Schools, including Excel’s values and educational model;
  • A commitment to addressing racial and economic inequity in education;
  • Demonstrated thought-leadership and the ability/willingness to implement strategic programs that align with Excel Academy’s diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.

  • The ability to work effectively in a team environment and the willingness and desire to support others in doing their best work; and

Preference will be given to applicants who also:

  • Have experience in a public or charter school setting;
  • Speak Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic fluently;
