Assistant Superintendent – Paper

 

 

The Assistant Superintendent role requires the incumbent to supervise and manage aspects of the paper machine. Responsible for managing individuals and equipment in their area, with the intent of maximizing productivity of the department. Ensures safety, productivity, quality, and environmental and cost goals are met.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Uses the Domtar values to organize, supervise and maintain daily aspects of operation. Achieves all safety and environmental requirements while coordinating the processes and maintenance to give maximum area uptime with the highest quality standards at a minimum cost.
  • Supports the development and execution of a proactive safety program in area. Incumbent is required to do area safety audits, job observations and risk assessments as prescribed. Responsible to follow-up on all unsafe conditions reported in area.
  • In conjunction with the superintendent , incumbent coordinates operations and maintenance in their respective areas of responsibility to ensure maximum operating efficiency. Plans all shutdowns with the superintendent, area maintenance superintendent and planner. Incumbent is responsible for assisting with work planning, work prioritization and daily coordination.
  • Decides on remedial action to resolve issues affecting employees or production with respect to safety, quality, environment, or throughput.
  • Daily monitoring and troubleshooting of paper machine process to ensure quality and maximum production rates.
  • Incumbent is required to be an effective communicator, ensuring the area workers fully understand the aspects of all maintenance requirements and reasons for process changes in the worker’s job position. Ensures applicable Company policy and procedures, government legislation, and collective bargaining agreement obligations are adhered to.
  • Assist with the development of operating budgets and capital expenditure projects. Manages cost control of their respective areas in the operating budget.


Required Qualifications/Professional Experience/Years of Experience:
 

  • A minimum of (2) two to (10) ten years of related experience in the pulp and paper industry, in increasingly responsible jobs.
  • Post-secondary education in engineering or similar field, with industrial experience.
  • Supervisory and leadership experience, including leadership in a unionized environment.
  • Strong understanding of papermaking processes such as fiber refining, wet end chemistry, drying, and winding.

  • Leadership - well developed and demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills in a unionized environment.
  • Technical - Knowledgeable in the operation and maintenance of a paper mill.
  • Innovation – implements process or design changes to improve operation of department.
  • Work Complexity – high level of multi-tasking responsibility for personnel, safety, maintenance, and production issues.
  • Advanced experience, knowledge and understanding of safe work practices.
  • The ability to prioritize makes sound decisions, and resolve issues efficiently and effectively.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with various departments/areas and individuals (internal and external).
  • Strong organizational, planning and time management skills.
  • Analytical, critical thinking and proven problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Results focused and detail-oriented.  Excellent computer skills - working knowledge of SAP would be an asset.
