Microsoft Applications Administrator
Location: London, Darlington, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham, Salford
The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has a clear mission - to grow the economy. Our role is to help businesses invest, grow and export to create jobs and opportunities right across the country. We do this in three ways.
Firstly, we help to build a strong, competitive business environment, where consumers are protected and companies rewarded for treating their employees properly.
Secondly, we open international markets and ensure resilient supply chains. This can be through Free Trade Agreements, trade facilitation and multilateral agreements.
Finally, we work in partnership with businesses every day, providing advance, finance and deal-making support to those looking to start up, invest, export and grow.
The Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) directorate develops and operates tools and services to support us in this mission. The team have been nominated three times in a row for ‘Best Public Sector Employer’ at the Women in Tech awards! We require a Microsoft 365 (M365) application administrator to support the in-house Microsoft team with processing various application queries.
The applications administrator will monitor service requests logged for the team and provide support to staff across the department, as per their requirements. You’ll guide users through best practice, championing M365 solutions where possible.
You should have experience of using the Microsoft admin centre, as part of the role will require using the Teams and SharePoint admin centres to carry out activities such as checking permissions and amending group settings.
You will work with our M365 applications engineer team to implement changes and support staff. As part of this role, you’ll actively promote the use of M365 applications, helping the department make the most of the M365 applications that are available.
Work with the Microsoft 365 team to improve ways of working in the organisation using Microsoft 365 solutions such as Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Planner, Microsoft Power Automate, Lists, SharePoint and other Microsoft applications.
Provide technical user support for incidents escalated from the helpdesk and resolve system / application issues relating to Microsoft applications and tools, including SharePoint, Planner and Microsoft Forms

If you are judged a near miss at interview, you may be offered a post at the grade below the one you applied for.

Accessibility statement for Jobvite
Using this online platform
Jobvite is an online platform built, hosted and controlled by a third party supplier, Jobvite, and used by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT). It allows people to apply for a job in the Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) Directorate within DBT.
DBT wants the third party online services that it uses to comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA as a minimum so all users are able to use this platform.
This means you should be able to:
- change colours, contrast levels and font sizes
- zoom up to 200% without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
- navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
The platform will:
- use words that are clear and simple to understand throughout the website
- ensure all images have accessible descriptions where necessary
AbilityNet has tips on how to make your device easier to use if you have a disability.
How accessible this platform is
Recent testing showed that parts of the platform are not fully accessible, including:
- Some options (including drop down menus) cannot be accessed with just a keyboard
- The focus is not always visible when moving through some pages with the tab key
- Some small parts of the platform are CSS dependent
- Some pages contain titles that are not sufficiently descriptive
- On mobile devices, the pages cannot be resized using pinch or spread gestures
This platform is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed above.
We are actively working with the supplier to improve the accessibility of this platform and for the supplier to fix these issues during regular service updates. We aim for all the third party services we use to be fully compliant by September 2020.
What to do if you cannot access parts of this website
