JOB SUMMARY
 
The Maintenance Technician performs skilled maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and improvement work across Zoo facilities, exhibits, infrastructure, and guest-facing areas. This position supports preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance, operational response, and facility improvement projects involving building systems, structures, equipment, and grounds infrastructure. Work is performed with limited supervision and requires coordination with internal departments, contractors, and other trades to maintain safe, functional, and reliable facilities throughout the Zoo campus.
 
 
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Perform preventative maintenance inspections, troubleshooting, repairs, and corrective maintenance on Zoo facilities, buildings, exhibits, infrastructure, and guest-facing areas.
Respond to work orders, operational requests, and emergency maintenance issues in a timely and professional manner.
Perform general building maintenance including carpentry, drywall, painting, roofing, concrete, masonry, welding, fabrication, fencing, gate repair, door and hardware installation, and related repairs.
Assist with facility improvement projects, exhibit modifications, special events, operational support, and general campus maintenance activities.
Coordinate work activities with other maintenance trades, Animal Care staff, Operations staff, contractors, and outside vendors as required.
Maintain accurate work documentation and complete work orders using the Zoo’s computerized maintenance management system (FMX).
Safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, forklifts, utility vehicles, and light equipment required to perform assigned work.
Maintain tools, equipment, materials, and work areas in a safe and organized condition while working safely around animal habitats, construction zones, maintenance areas, and guest-facing environments.
Perform other duties as assigned.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
 
High school diploma or GED required.
Two (2) years of experience in commercial, industrial, institutional, or facilities maintenance work
Experience with general building maintenance including carpentry, painting, drywall, doors/hardware, concrete repair, welding, fabrication, or related trades work.
Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, irrigation, and general building systems preferred.
Ability to troubleshoot maintenance issues, read and interpret basic drawings and work instructions, and complete repairs with limited supervision.
Ability to safely operate maintenance tools, equipment, ladders, lifts, utility vehicles, and material handling equipment.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding work including walking, standing, climbing ladders, kneeling, lifting, and carrying up to 70 pounds.
Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as operational needs require.
Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license.
Must be self-motivated, organized, dependable, and able to work independently or as part of a team with effective verbal and written communication skills.
Successful candidates must pass pre-employment drug screening, background check, and TB test.
