Who We're looking for
Key Responsibilities
- Review, abstract, and code behavioral health, psychiatric, counseling, crisis intervention, and integrated care service documentation using current ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding standards.
- Assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes in compliance with AHCCCS, Medicaid, Medicare, CMS, and payer-specific guidelines.
- Serve as an internal resource and subject matter expert regarding behavioral health coding, documentation standards, and billing compliance.
- Provide guidance and education to providers, clinicians, and administrative staff regarding coding best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Advanced understanding of behavioral health terminology, psychiatric documentation, integrated care services, and behavioral health coding guidelines.
- Ability to interpret and apply complex coding regulations, payer requirements, and compliance standards specific to behavioral health services.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Medical Coding, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years of professional medical coding experience in behavioral health, mental health, psychiatric services, or integrated healthcare settings.
- Current medical coding certification required, such as CPC, CCS, COC, or equivalent.
- Completion of a Behavioral Health Coding certification course, specialty training program, or documented specialization in behavioral health/psychiatric coding is required.
- Demonstrated expertise using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems within behavioral health settings.
- Strong working knowledge of AHCCCS, Medicaid, Medicare, CMS, and payer-specific behavioral health billing requirements.
- Experience conducting coding audits, documentation reviews, and compliance monitoring activities preferred.
- Prior experience presenting trainings, facilitating workshops, or leading staff education sessions strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, Microsoft Office applications, and coding/billing software.
