CICONIX, a Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB) specializing in military and Veterans healthcare, is seeking a Forensic Scientist 2 to assist the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System (AFMES) provide medical-legal investigations, forensic analysis, and pathology services for U.S. military personnel, DoD civilians, and eligible individuals.

 

Job Overview: 

This role, Forensic Scientist 2, focuses on DNA analysis and program development within a forensic laboratory, conducting investigative studies on biological materials using advanced DNA typing methods and contributing to casework, research, and technical program expansion. Key responsibilities include managing DNA casework, writing and reviewing scientific protocols, maintaining quality assurance, and testifying as an expert witness. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree or higher in biology, chemistry, or forensic science, with coursework in biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and statistics relevant to DNA analysis.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Documentation and Administrative Support:

  • Perform filing, transcription, administrative typing, and data entry.
  • Prepare and edit technical and general documentation using Microsoft Office software.

DNA Analysis and Casework:

  • Serve as a DNA Analyst conducting investigative studies on biological materials.
  • Perform routine and special project DNA typing casework.
  • Review casework results, write DNA comparison reports, and manage large sample sets.
  • Testify as an expert witness on DNA findings when required.

Technical Program and Laboratory Support:

  • Assist in program maintenance and development.
  • Provide technical support in bioinformatics, IT, and lab automation.
  • Support resource and logistical management for DNA Operations.
  • Organize and present educational activities related to DNA analysis.

Laboratory Operations and Quality Assurance:

  • Set up and maintain lab instruments and equipment.
  • Write, review, and edit protocols, SOPs, and lab operating instructions.
  • Assist with quality assurance tasks, including standards maintenance, equipment maintenance, and proficiency testing.
  • Perform routine lab housekeeping, including supply maintenance and cleanliness.

Advanced DNA Typing and Research:

  • Conduct DNA studies on tissue, skeletal bone, and teeth using advanced sequencing techniques (e.g., mtDNA, SNP, STR testing).
  • Document research and method development activities.
  • Develop and manage DNA databases for various population samples.
  • Design and perform studies to improve DNA recovery from mixed/low-template specimens.

Project and Team Coordination:

  • Lead research projects to advance DNA-based biometric methods.
  • Manage and coordinate interns, part-time staff, and visiting scientists on research projects.

Professional Engagement:

  • Present scientific findings at domestic and international conferences.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Education:  Bachelor’s (or its equivalent) or an advanced degree in a biology, chemistry, forensic science or physical sciences and shall have successfully completed a minimum of 9 cumulative semester hours or equivalent (graduate or undergraduate level) course work covering the following subject areas: biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology; and course work and/or training in statistics and/or population genetics as it applies to forensic DNA analysis. 
  • Experience:  2-4 years with Bachelor’s or 0-2 years with Master’s

The Armed Forces Medical Examiner System (AFMES) is a vital Department of Defense entity responsible for providing medical-legal investigations, including autopsies and forensic services, for deaths involving military personnel, their families, and authorized civilians.
