Using innovative science, our teams are working to save threatened and endangered species and return them to the wild, and to conserve threatened communities and populations in situ, and better understand the impact of threats and conservation interventions through scientific investigations.
Our conservation expertise is focused in two areas – Community Conservation and Conservation Translocations.
Reporting to the CEO, the Chief Conservation Officer (CCO) will serve as a strategic leader and member of the Wilder Institute | Calgary Zoo Executive Team. The CCO is an individual who has the experience to manage lead and inspire a team of senior leaders and other talented staff to sustain and enhance the world-class, conservation and science work that has long defined the Wilder Institute | Calgary Zoo as a respected contributor in the wildlife conservation community. This individual will be a globally respected leader as a visionary and a record of accomplishment in demonstrating forward thinking skills in addressing near and long-term goals.
As the successful candidate, you must possess leadership experience at a senior management or executive level and a minimum doctorate or equivalent in a related field, in addition to at least 15 years experience related to conservation research, conservation advocacy, conservation field work, curatorship, biological/zoological research and/or ecological efforts. Holding an academic position at a recognized post-secondary institution would be seen as a desirable asset. You will also have a sound scientific publication record in peer reviewed scientific journals to go along with strong interest in Translocation of Endangered Species and Community Based Conservation. A management style that is goal oriented with a clear sense of direction and accountability is required. Lastly, you will have strong political acumen and superior written and project management skills.
