What we’re looking for

 

This is an exciting managerial opportunity to lead the editorial team in Japan, for one of the world’s leading commodity price reporting and news agencies. Japan is at the crossroads of the global energy transition and is also a key market for traditional energy and other commodities. The position overseas production of value-added original news from a team of five reporters covering the oil, gas and chemicals markets, new energy such as hydrogen and ammonia, and metals, among other commodity classes.

 

This position oversees daily operations of the Japan editorial team, including editorial administrative duties, news content direction, and personnel management. The person in this position will be responsible for driving the new mission of Argus Japan to raise the level of original news in terms of both quality and quantity. This person will work closely with other senior staff, including the Japan Executive Sr. Editor, who reports to this position. The role reports to the Japan GM and the Managing Editor for Asia.

 

What will you be doing
 

  • Manage day-to-day Editorial operations
  • Help ensure successful production of all Japan-based news
  • Liaise with Singapore copy editing desk
  • Ensure bureau work and record keeping is compliant with Argus policies
  • Coordinate and document training
  • Approve news story corrections
  • Attend editors' meetings regularly
  • Represent Editorial for Japan crisis management, coordinating with Japan GM
  • Ensure bureau is adequately staffed by managing personal leave requests
  • Conduct mid-year and end-of-year reviews
  • Support in the recruitment process as and when needed

 

Additional responsibilities entail supporting managing editor with:

 

  • Managing personnel issues
  • Hiring, in coordination with HR
  • Special projects as needed

 

Skills and Experience

 

  • Fluency in English, native-level fluency in Japanese
  • News reporting experience, minimum ten years
  • Management experience preferred but not required
  • Excellent communication skills across global regions
  • Days and hours of work are generally Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Earlier or later hours, or weekend hours, may be expected on occasion.
