3D Environment Artist - Unreal 5 MMO Game Prototype
About us:
At Amber, we're always on the hunt for the most talented individuals in the industry to join our team. We're dedicated to delivering top-notch service to our customers and know that our employees are key to making that happen. We offer attractive compensation packages and plenty of chances to grow with us, and we're always on the lookout for ways to do things better. Our team works together towards common goals and we value each member's contributions to our mission of continuous improvement and innovation.
About the role:
We are looking for a 3D Environment Artist to join a small, high-impact team building an Unreal Engine 5 prototype for an open-world MMO from the creators of an incredibly successful game. The prototype will be used to record video material and to drive internal alignment across design, art, and engineering.
This is a remote, full-time contract, expected to start immediately and last for around three months, with potential to extend. The team is small, so your work will be visible and your decisions will have real weight.
You will build three key biomes (taiga, desert, cave), focusing on assembling high-quality environments using modular and kitbashed assets. As the environment art owner, you will ensure visual cohesion, strong environmental storytelling, and consistent material definition.
What to expect from the process:
- Profile Preselection: Our Talent Acquisition team will review your profile.
- Talent Acquisition Screening: Selected candidates will be contacted to undergo an initial interview to discuss their experience, skills, and fit for the role.
- Test: Qualified candidates will be invited to complete an assessment to demonstrate their abilities.
- Interviews: Finalists will participate in technical and cultural interviews to assess their proficiency and compatibility with our team.
The quest :
- Own the creation of three distinct biomes – taiga, desert, and underground cave system – from blockout through final polish, using a mix of marketplace assets and original content, in Unreal 5.7.
- Assemble and dress kitbashed environments so they read as coherent and tonally consistent, even when individual assets come from different sources.
- Set up lighting, atmosphere, and composition that make environments feel inhabited and cinematic at the camera distances used for recording.
- Build modular environment kits (terrain, rocks, foliage, structures) that can be reused and extended as the prototype grows.
- Adjust materials, shaders, and terrain to improve visual quality and cohesion.
- Ensure environments are visually aligned with the project tone of medieval Earth in the future.
- Collaborate closely with a generalist tech artist - you focus on the world, they make everything work together.
- Work within daily review cycles to stay aligned with the direction and minimize rework.
- Flag scope risks early and help the team prioritize what gets built given the timeline.
The skills :
- 5+ years of professional environment art experience in game development.
- Demonstrable ability to build visually compelling environments or open-world scenes in Unreal Engine 5.
- Strong fundamentals of PBR workflows and material creation.
- Solid understanding of lighting, composition, and world-building.
- Experience with terrain tools and foliage systems.
- Comfortable working with marketplace and kitbash assets, and assembling them into something coherent.
- Ability to work quickly and autonomously in a prototype-driven workflow.
- Good written and spoken English for daily communication and collaboration.
Nice to have:
- Experience working on sandbox or MMO games.
- Familiarity with procedural world-building workflows.
- Experience dressing environments for video capture or cinematic purposes (trailers, in-engine footage).
- Comfort with AI-assisted asset generation pipelines.
- Nanite, Lumen, or PCG experience in UE5.
Practical details:
- Full-time remote contract through early August 2026, with potential to extend.
- Preference for overlapping working hours with Eastern America.
- Unreal Engine 5.7.
The reward:
- Competitive project-based compensation
- Opportunity to work on exciting and diverse projects
- Clear communication and support throughout the project duration.
- Flexibility in project timelines and deadlines.
- Potential for long-term collaboration on future projects.
- Transparent and fair evaluation of your work.
