Located in Toronto, the Art Gallery of Ontario is one of the largest art museums in North America, attracting approximately one million visitors annually. The AGO Collection of more than 120,000 works of art ranges from cutting-edge contemporary art to significant works by Indigenous and Canadian artists and European masterpieces.
 
We are currently seeking an Art Educator, Art of Africa & the African Diaspora to join our Education & Programming team. Under the direction of the Manager, School Programs and Early Learning, the incumbent will work in conjunction with other Art Educators, staff and interns to support the design and facilitation of school programs through the art of Africa and the African Diaspora, that are engaging, innovative, child-centered, accessible and equitable. They will respond to visitor needs and program objectives within the context of School Programs by making relevant connections between Afrodiasporic perspectives and the Ontario curriculum. They will also provide in-gallery, digital, and studio-based experiences for elementary and secondary students, through a range of activities that are participatory and experimental, focused on the historical and contemporary aspects of global Africa and artists from the African Diaspora.
 
The rate of pay for this position is $37.69 - $47.08 per hour
 
What is this position responsible for?
  • As directed by the Manager, Schools and Early Learning provides a deeper understanding to the art of global Africa and the African diaspora. Integrates perspectives through the lens of African art with holistic, informed expertise. Through a global African perspective, delivers a range of digital, in-gallery, and studio-based school programs for elementary and secondary school students that emphasis process and encourage the development of critical thinking skills through a decolonial and anti-oppression lens.  Ensures that all programs are responsive to student and teacher needs and meet the program outcomes and objectives as outlined by the Manager, Schools and Early Learning. 
  • Presents programming on Google Meets and Zoom Meet platforms with the ability to   facilitate live sessions independently.  Presents programming on Zoom Webinar platforms including the ability to create engaging presentation decks on Google Slides, PowerPoint while incorporating digital teaching tools such as Whiteboards, sound, polls and Jamboards. Familiarity with visual engagement strategies for an on-line platform that are educational, engaging and innovative, with an emphasis on process while encouraging personal creativity.
  • Under direction of the Manager, Schools and Early Learning, reviews the research of digital resources such as worksheets and Teacher Resources under the guidance of the Associate Curator for upcoming exhibition through a decolonial and anti-oppression lens. 
  • Assists and prepares relevant research and activities that integrate perspectives from art of Africa and the African diaspora to engage elementary and secondary school students and their teachers. Assists in development of programs that support audiences with vocabulary to speak to art of Africa and the diaspora. Suggests visual engagement strategies for an online platform.  Supports the program plans by the Manager and Curatorial Associate.
  • Participates in training for staff and volunteers as required and stays current with the AGO collection and programming as well as with new developments in African art and the diaspora on education and social learning theory. Works with the managers and Chief Technician to organize and maintain the materials, supplies, equipment and resources needed to support activities. 
  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned.          
 
What are we looking for?
  • Demonstrated teaching experience (minimum 2 years) in a formal and/or informal learning environment involving children and youth.
  • Personal lived experience with communities of African descent.
  • Post-secondary studies in Education, Art Education, Fine Art or Art History combined with some studio experience and/or equivalent life and work experience.
  • Demonstrated studio practice with relevant critically recognized exhibitions or presentations in the last five years.
  • Sound knowledge of learning theories and teaching methodologies as well as various media, techniques and practices relevant to digital, in-gallery and studio-based practices.
  • Demonstrated teamwork skills and a desire to work as part of an instructional team comprised of staff, volunteers and interns.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to lifelong learning and excellent customer service.
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable, and self-reflective.
  • Familiarity with the Ontario curriculum.
  • Ability to speak French and/or a language other than English is an asset.
  • Demonstrated computer competency skills (word, excel, email, etc.)
