(35 hours per week (7 hours per day) with additional rotational shifts that include early shifts starting at 7:30 AM or late shifts ending at 6:00 PM to support before- and after-camp programming)

Located in Toronto, the Art Gallery of Ontario (“the AGO”) is one of the largest art museums in North America, with a collection of close to 100,000 works. At AGO Art Camp, we believe in fostering creativity and imagination in young artists. We are currently seeking a Temporary Full-Time, AGO Art Camp Counsellor to join our Education & Programming team for the AGO’s Summer Art Camp. Under the direction of the Manager, Camp, Courses and Studio Programming, the incumbent will be responsible for the daily supervision and mentorship of AGO Art Camp Leaders-in-Training (LIT) participants (ages 14–15). They will develop and deliver leadership-focused programming during the two-week LIT program in collaboration with the Camp Coordinator and Education & Programming staff. They will lead week one professional development sessions in partnership with AGO staff specialists, supporting learning in teamwork, communication, conflict resolution, diversity, equity and inclusion, problem solving, and self-care. In week two, mentors LIT participants during their camp placements, providing coaching, feedback and support as they gain hands-on experience assisting in camps.
This role functions as a specialized position during designated LIT program weeks, with broader camp responsibilities during non-LIT weeks in assigned capacities such as Float Counsellor, Support Counsellor, or Camp Counsellor, contributing to safe supervision, activity leadership and overall program delivery. The AGO Art Camp Leaders-in-Training (LIT) Counsellor will provide excellent front line customer service when liaising with parents/guardians, campers, AGO staff, volunteers and patrons of the gallery.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications, skills, and experience: 
  • Enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary program in visual arts, education, physical education, health, recreation or other appropriate areas of study (or within 24 months of graduation)
  • Experience working with children ages 5-13 and youth ages 14–17 in camp or educational settings
  • Experience facilitating workshops or group discussions
  • Experience mentoring youth and providing constructive feedback
  • Demonstrated understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion principles
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent problem solving and team-building skills
  • Enjoys working with youth and supporting emerging leaders
  • Strong interest in the visual arts
  • Standard First Aid CPR/AED Level C is required before start of employment
