We are currently seeking a Gallery School Technician to join our Education & Programming team. Under the direction of the Manager, School Programs and Early Learning the incumbent will prepare studio spaces for classes and workshops including the setup of furniture, tools, materials and other supplies. They will support the Chief Technician in monitoring inventory, maintaining studio, workshop and storage facilities; support instructional staff through technical assistance for students.
 
The rate of pay for this position is $26.50 to $33.13 per hour
 
What is this position responsible for?
  • Sets up and takes down studio furniture (i.e. tables, chairs, model stands, lights, etc.) for all classes, workshops and events.  Conducts general cleanup of studio including sink cleanup, sweeping floors, bagging and removing trash, and returning materials and tools back to designated storage areas.                 
  • Conducts regular scheduled maintenance and cleaning of materials and art storage areas, sinks and traps, furniture, tools and equipment. Assists with keeping a daily inventory of materials under the supervision of Chief Technician.
  • Monitors that all users, including students and instructors conform to established safe operating practices.  Models safe practices as needed and reports incidents in logbook or to Chief Technician and Manager as required. Supports Instructors and Chief technician to ensure safe operations of the studio.
  • During programming, upon request and where appropriate, shares information on using various studio materials or production techniques (i.e. plaster casting etc.). Supports instructors in the design, construction and assembly of projects as needed.  Assists children’s instructors to monitor students in the studio to support their learning and ensure their safety throughout the class.                              
  • Under the direction of Chief Technician, as required, purchases and prepares materials for classes, workshops and other studio activities. Picks up materials on the dock. Distributes and replenishes materials for Response Stations in the Gallery.             
  • Other duties as assigned.  
                                                                                                                                                                 
What are we looking for?
  • Working knowledge of artist’s materials and methods in a studio environment (ex painting, printmaking, sculpture)
  • Familiarity with computer programs (Word, Excel, Mail)
  • Knowledge and experience working with media equipment  such as Mac, digital cameras, iPad, projectors, media connections, lighting  etc.
  • Knowledge of carpentry techniques and materials.
  • Working knowledge of handling and installing works of art.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • WHMIS certification preferred
  • Experience operating a variety of hand and power tools for basic repair of furniture and/or equipment.
