We are currently seeking a Manager, School Teacher Programs and Experiential Adult Learning to join our Education & Programming team. In collaboration with the Richard & Elizabeth Currie Chief, Education & Programming, the Manager, School Teacher Programs, and Adult Experiential Learning actively develops and oversees engaging learning opportunities for Kindergarten to Grade 12 students and teachers, and adult learners for in-person and digital experiences. They are involved in identifying significant trends in museum education, historical and contemporary visual arts practices and histories, as well as ideas, trends and best practices in contemporary culture, museum programming, digital and onsite learning. They work to research, develop, produce and create the AGO public programs and learning opportunities across the museum with a focus on school, teacher and adult learning, as well as other lifelong learning and engagement experiences within the museum. They will work in consultation with colleagues, internally and externally, to create and realize all these programs and ensure they support the AGO mission of art, audience and learning. At all times, they will fully integrate the artistic, intellectual, and financial goals of the organization and participate in the ongoing operations of the E&P department along with upholding the AGO values of respect, openness, collaboration and accountability.
The salary range for this position is $89,180 - $111,456 per annum
What is this position responsible for?
- Working in collaboration with the Richard & Elizabeth Currie Chief, Education & Programming, research, develop, and deliver new and innovative school programs, teacher programs, virtual school programs (VSP), adult tours and bespoke programming.
- The focus of this leadership position is developing, overseeing and assessing kindergarten to grade 12 Ontario curriculum-based learning opportunities for students and educators within the museum and gallery school, , virtual school programs that may include large multi-year and short-term partnership programs.
- Another focus is to develop and oversea adult experiential learning for group tours, corporate and bespoke programs.
- This role includes collecting and analyzing data (surveys, anecdotal, registration and/or quantitative) to assess learning outcomes and programs
- Build and maintain the Teacher Access Program (TAP) for certified teachers through regular communication and programming.
- Under the strategic leadership of the Chief of Education & Programming, and in collaboration with the Education & Programming team foster innovation, strategic thinking and propose and develop programs and initiatives that actively encourage new and diverse audiences to engage with art and learning in person and on digital platforms. Develop partnerships with organizations both locally, nationally and internationally to ensure multiple voices are integral to the AGO. work and vision to lead global conversations from Toronto.
- Manage the administrative and logistical planning and coordination of all, of onsite and digital school, teacher and adult learning. programs. When necessary, engage in a hiring process and support the onboarding of new staff.
- Manage and support the work performance of, Art Educators, Program Assistants, Production and Studio Coordinator, Gallery School Technicians and interns, and guest artists.
- Develop and facilitate professional learning for staff connected to art in the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions, pedagogy, museum-based learning and support diverse learners and audiences
- This role is responsible for identifying projections, articulating and communicating expectations, modelling and upholding AGO Values mentoring and coaching staff, supervising progress and facilitating access to colleagues for optimal program delivery for learning and engagement. When necessary, this role requires performance management to support staff in fulfilling their duties and following AGO Values.
- Manage the creation and dissemination of all production-related activities and ensure efficiencies and quality at all times.
- Manage delivery of services in accordance with department systems and procedures, apply collective agreements, and AGO’s policies and procedures on security, administration, human resources, and departmental manager/supervisor responsibilities for workplace health and safety.
- Monitor expenses and revenue budgets assisting in setting targets and delivering on annual goals.
- Collaborate with appropriate internal pan-gallery departments throughout the development of programs and production to create opportunities for engagement and learning for the AGO permanent collections and temporary exhibitions in response to the contemporary cultural sphere.
- Contribute to the development of the AGO as a site of dynamic public intellectual and creative life around art and visual culture to position the museum as the leader in museum education, firstly with schools, then teacher programs and adult learning.
- Oversee as well as develop, shape and implement critical schedules for AGO School and Teacher Programs, and Adult Experiential Learning to ensure that all deliverables related to the programs are met.
- Liaising with visitor services, communications, design and development and other stakeholders throughout the organization to ensure the seamless execution of all programs.
- Promote the AGO and AGO education programs to the public by building and maintaining positive relationships with external stakeholders and communities.
- Attend and participate in Education and Programming Committee meetings.
- Provide input into the development of the overall Education & Programming vision, strategy, policy and procedures, and related strategic thinking
- Working with the Richard & Elizabeth Currie Chief, Education & Programming work to develop suitable metrics and evaluation tools for all programs to better understand and communicate the impact of programs, and to use data to inform programming and staffing. When possible, conduct research and publish on museum education and learning, with focus on, school engagement, museum pedagogy, teacher programs, and lifelong learning in the arts.
- Performs other duties and projects as assigned
What are we looking for?
- Minimum 5-7 years directly related experience leading collaborative programming within a comparable museum setting or educational institution for Kindergarten through Grade 12 students and teachers
- Requires a post-secondary degree in (arts) education, art history, fine art, design, museum studies, or a related field or the equivalent of education and experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of education, Art History, museum learning and engagement, pedagogical frameworks, public programs, informal learning and other related museums practices and pedagogies as well as current critical theory and broad knowledge of popular culture
- Considerable and proven knowledge and close work with major school boards and private schools
- Proven lesson plan development related to specific grade levels, with defined goals, learning outcomes, objectives and identifying strands connected to the Ontario curriculum, with proven record in developing pre and post visit activities
- Well-developed organizational, interpersonal, and public relations skills.
- Experience developing and tracking budgets.
- Directly related experience in arts education and public programs and administrative management.
- Demonstrated commitment to teamwork to effectively communicate and utilize available resources and experience working effectively with team members.
- Demonstrated writing and research skills, including professional publication history.
- Demonstrated experience in speaking and writing about art and museum studies, public programs or learning to specialized as well as broader audiences.
- Knowledge of program production inside a museum.
- Demonstrated experience working with a variety of computer software packages; including content management systems, excel, and production suites
- Knowledge of French and/or other languages an asset.
