Located in Toronto, the Art Gallery of Ontario is one of the largest art museums in North America, attracting approximately one million visitors annually. The AGO Collection of more than 120,000 works of art ranges from cutting-edge contemporary art to significant works by Indigenous and Canadian artists and European masterpieces.
We are currently seeking a Maintenance Worker II - Painting/Building Repairs (Handyperson) to join our Facility Services team. Under the direction of the Director, Facility Services the incumbent will perform interior and exterior general building maintenance including: painting, finishes, repairing hardware, basic construction work, etc., for general building upkeep and capital projects. They will assist in the clean and orderly maintenance of AGO property.
The rate of pay for this position is $49,831 - $62,244 per annum.
What is this position responsible for?
- As directed, provides general building upkeep repairs. Conducts periodic inspections of the facility to identify requirements/deficiencies and reports accordingly.
- Constructs walls and ceilings, performs demolition, tapes, sands and finishes drywall, performs concrete and wood finishing, repairs damaged walls and paints/finishes to match existing or to new specifications.
- Maintains and repairs building hardware: (including doors, vaults, filing cabinets, desk drawers, shelving, etc.). Maintains and repairs low security locks, changing locking mechanism cylinders as required.
- Organizes and maintains colour charts and paint samples of existing surfaces and furnishings within non-gallery areas. Organizes and maintains inventory and distribution of general maintenance tools, equipment, and supplies (including paint inventory). Makes repairs to department tools and equipment. Liaises with other departments for materials exchange as required.
- Identifies products and vendors and makes recommendations for purchase.
- Provides comments colours and finishes for projects and where requested, produces samples for review.
- Provides assistance to trades, such as: minor plumbing, minor electrical, cable pulling, etc.
- Delivers items to and from all areas of the building as required
What are we looking for?
- Working knowledge of painting/finishing techniques, methods and materials
- Working knowledge of basic construction, drywall installation, steel studs, demolition and finishing methods
- Working knowledge of furniture installation and repair
- Working knowledge of basic equipment maintenance
- Working knowledge of safe handling and use of power tools including compound mitre saw, grinder, reciprocating saw, drill, jigsaw, etc.
- Operates lifting aids. May operate scissor lift or other lifting devices.
- Knowledge of basic operations of paint spraying equipment
- Knowledge of basic carpentry, electrical, and plumbing
- Knowledge of building and fire codes for construction and maintenance projects
- Ability to follow verbal and written directions with good verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Requirements
