Admission Counselor

Reporting to the Director of Undergraduate Admission, this position works as part of an admissions team responsible for the recruitment and admission of undergraduate students. The Counselor will help guide prospective students through the steps to enrollment.  They will be involved in a range of on and off campus recruitment activities including school visits, college fairs, transfer programs, counselor meetings and applicant interviews as well as the review and evaluation of applications from students.  The incumbent will be responsible for the recruitment and evaluation of all Bachelor of Fine Arts applicants, including all portfolio submissions to the university.

Primary/Principal Responsibilities:

-Represent the University at college fairs and in secondary schools and community colleges; freshman recruitment and file review (approximately 600-800 applications); other duties as assigned. 
-The incumbent will travel/recruit approximately 10-12 weeks between the fall and spring semesters, (including hosting area receptions and yield events).
-Represent Suffolk at National Portfolio Days and evaluate all BFA candidates for admission.
-Conduct on and off-campus interviews with students and families as requested.
-Demonstrated ability and understanding of the mission of the university’s urban location and the unique opportunity this presents for prospective students.
-Ability to demonstrate enthusiasm about the University, has a strong work ethic, exercises sound judgment, and is skilled at public speaking and writing. 
-Ability to communicate professionally with a variety of different internal and external audiences.
-The Admission Counselor is responsible for the timely and accurate evaluation of freshman applicants using a digital-based application system. The incumbent will issue admission decisions and rankings for honors consideration or special financial aid merit programs in accordance with University parameters. Questionable cases are referred to the supervisor.
-Counsels applicants, their families, school counselors, and advisors on Suffolk University’s admission policies and procedures.
-Assists with coordinating and implementing applicant yield activities such as area receptions and Suffolk Showcase. 
-Assists the Welcome Center in conducting information sessions for students and families.
-Responsible for coordinating and conducting special information sessions for Suffolk’s Art & Design programs.
-Assists in activities for newly accepted students such as advising, retention, orientation and registration.
-Will be assigned other project and liaison work as needed.


  • At least one year of experience in recruitment and admission, preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree Required (Fine Art/BFA preferred)
  • Requires travel as well as evening and weekend work.
  • Ability to travel for several weeks at a time.
  • Ability to work a rigorous schedule and flexible hours.
  • Must be 18 years old, have at least two years of driving experience and have a valid driver’s license from the U.S. or U.S. Territories; must submit to an annual driver record check and maintain an acceptable driving record per university and/or insurance carrier requirements; must complete the University driver safety training within 60 days of hire and additional driver training as needed.
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Strong time management and ability to meet strict, frequent deadlines.
  • Strong computer proficiency including a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and expertise in using social media to attract and recruit applicants.
  • Experience with reading and evaluating application materials using a digital based application system (Slate preferred).
  • Outstanding verbal communication skills - ability to speak publicly in front of small and large audiences.
  • Ability to engage and network with prospective applicants, families and secondary school counselors.
  • Ability to represent Suffolk University professionally, express the value of attending Suffolk.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team on group projects.
