Director, Enterprise Applications
Summary of Position: The Director of Enterprise Applications (EA) leads and manages activities related to the life cycle of the University’s Enterprise Applications Catalog (EAC). These activities include software application strategy, architecture and integrations, service design and service catalog, technical operations and support, troubleshooting, maintenance activities, system performance analysis for continuous improvement, vendor relations and the retirement and renewal of software applications. S/He works closely with the Strategic Procurement Office to negotiate and procure new applications.
S/He leads the ITS Applications Team, which works collaboratively with senior business and academic leaders, the CIO, ACIO, ISO, Project Management Office and IT Governance system to create and implement a forward-looking technology vision and strategy to support the current and emerging academic and administrative needs of the University.
The Director’s key responsibility over the next three years will be to successfully execute multi-year projects to retire and replace Suffolk’s 30+ year old core system (Ellucian Colleague) with new SaaS, cloud-based, Financial, Student, and Advancement systems, and build an effective data warehouse and BI solution. S/He will need to assess the skill set of the existing team and adjust as necessary to ensure successful project implementations and the creation of an effective post-production support and governance environment.
Technical and Team Leadership—Model the Way
- The Director will lead the effort to retire Ellucian Colleague and stabilize its operations. S/He will also share leadership for the implementation of a new, cloud based, SaaS system for Financials, Student Information, Advancement, and data warehouse and BI solution.
- Over time, S/He will become a role model and the in-house advocate and technical expert for building/configuring processes, reports, dashboards, and data security roles/groups/domains using Suffolk’s Workday HR system and soon to be selected Financial, Student, and Advancement Information Systems. Obtains certifications and encourages staff members to do so as well. S/He will present project results at conferences (e.g., EDUCAUSE, NERCOMP, RISING, etc.).
- The Director leads and manages the activities of the Enterprise Applications Team. This currently consists of five programmer/analysts, one integrations engineer, one portal admin, and a one business analyst/Workday administrator.
- S/He oversees the team structure, skill mix, and professional development of the Enterprise Applications Team staff members so as to meet/exceed evolving internal customer expectations. S/He will work to continuously assess and improve team member technical skills and understanding of academic and administrative departmental strategy, operations and needs, while leading the shift to greater usage of SaaS, cloud-based applications. Ensures that current and future ITS skill sets align to support University requirements and tactical/strategic goals—especially as different staff skills are required to support new and emerging cloud, SaaS-based applications and platforms.
- Works closely with the University Information Security Officer (ISO), Enterprise Architect, and IT Governance System to ensure appropriate data access, integrity, security, and compliance.
- Develops trust and a partnership with the ITS Project Management Office (PMO) to deliver quality projects on time and within budget.
- Focuses on creating forward-looking business innovations with superior service levels that delight customers, while being a role model for outstanding stakeholder communication and relationship building.
Enterprise Application Portfolio Management and Development—Shifting from an on-premise Colleague platform to a SaaS, Cloud Future
- Takes ownership of the University’s current application portfolio which includes the core Ellucian Colleague ERP system, the business intelligence and reporting environment (Informer), the document imaging system (iNow), and numerous academic and administrative applications and integrations which connect on-premise, third-party, and cloud/hosted services with the University’s existing infrastructure.
- Takes ownership and accountability for the retirement and stability of the Colleague system and associated ecosystem. Lead its replacement using new SaaS, cloud-based Financial and Student systems, and other functional components (e.g., reimplementation of Adaptive Insights, construction of a data warehouse and BI solution, implementation of a new system for Advancement, etc.).
- Takes ownership for the University’s new, cloud core, enterprise architecture. Standardizes and stabilizes operations, manages application and system development life cycles (SDLC), and implements industry best practices and standards to ensure stability, reliability, scalability, regulatory compliance and the security of enterprise data and applications. Works as a key member of the post production support team.
- Brings knowledge of higher education technology needs and operations, incorporates modern architecture/data architecture frameworks and the Suffolk Enterprise Architectural Principles as the foundation for development and integration with other systems.
- Ensures maximum utility from existing systems and applications, and that integrations between on-premise and cloud systems, applications, and services facilitates the secure and efficient flow of data between platforms. Over-time, ensures that the core of the application architecture fully supports real-time transactions and operations.
- Identifies and seeks creative and cost-effective solutions to problems, which minimizes risks and adverse impacts on the University community.
- Aligns planning, resources, and activities to ensure the ever-changing applications catalog aligns with the University’s vision, strategy and requirements of the academic and administrative units. Ensures that the applications catalog meets the needs of internal customers.
- Works as a key member of the IT Governance System and Project Steering Committees to effectively execute projects to implement our new SaaS Financial, Student, Advancement and data warehouse and BI systems.
- Contributes to the execution of the institution’s identity management, information security, and compliance initiatives, manages relationships with vendors and strategic partners, and assists the CIO, ACIO, and ISO with long-range planning and technology assessment, acquisition, and implementation.
Stakeholder/ITS Collaboration and Communication—Building Trust & High Performance Teams
- Utilizes exceptional communication and collaboration skills to serve as a key leader and partner in the discovery, evaluation, selection, planning, design, implementation, training and support for a broad set of academic and administrative applications, databases, and services.
- Engages with, and leads, portions of the IT governance system. Helps assess IT governance structure, speed, information requirements, and effectiveness while assisting in making changes for continuous improvement. Establishes and maintains productive, cooperative working relationships with stakeholders from across the entire Suffolk community.
- Helps lead the IT Governance Administrative Systems group (ASWG) to evaluate software project requests and the evaluation, prioritization, selection, implementation, operation, and life-cycle management of the enterprise application portfolio. Partners with the Project Management Office to track and evaluate technical capacity and shape and adapt enterprise project plans. Prioritizes the work of the Applications team to ensure that sufficient capacity exists to accomplish important projects.
- Works closely with the CIO and technology leadership team to set vision, determine innovative approaches, set and implement strategies and plans for products and services.
Enterprise Architecture Future Planning and Application Discovery—What’s Next?
- As a key member of the CIO’s Leadership Team s/he participates in weekly meetings with the CIO/ACIO and the other ITS Directors to create technology vision and innovations, set and execute strategy, and manage and continually improve ITS operations and services using ITIL best practices.
- Responsible for Suffolk’s future EA vision and strategy in an accelerating, technologically-driven world. This includes the planning, architecture, integration, implementation, testing, management, and shared support of the University’s future Enterprise Applications Catalog (EAC).
- Works with the academic and administrative leadership and the PMO to identify and research systems, applications, integrations, and emerging trends in information technology in the Higher Education sector that enhance the productivity of university stakeholders and the ITS team.
Required Education and Experience:
Knowledge and Experience with the Following:
- Enterprise architecture and identity/access management/governance systems.
- Data warehouse design, implementation, and operations.
- CRM platforms.
- Ellucian Colleague and the Rocket Unidata database and data structures in a higher education environment, including ability to directly trouble shoot and resolve performance problems and ensure that the system performance is optimized.
- Higher education academic and administrative information technology systems that can be brought to bear as the University retires Ellucian Colleague and implements Workday for Financials and Student as well as other SaaS, cloud-based systems for other business needs.
- Working with an implementation partner to plan, architect, configure/prototype, test, deploy, manage, and successfully execute all aspects of an information system implementation (i.e., systems for HR, financial, student, advancement and auxiliary systems (CRM systems, data warehouses, housing, orientation, student medical information, Title IX, CRM, Advancement annual giving and research tools, etc.)). This includes integration design and scenario-based unit and end-to-end testing of on-premise and cloud-based SaaS information systems in a higher education environment and the design/implementation of appropriate training programs.
- ITIL-based code control systems, change management practices and IT Governance systems.
- Complex integration methodologies and architectures and modern iPaaS integration technologies/tools (e.g., SnapLogic, EIBs, Workday Studio, Eclipse, etc.).
- Modern object-oriented languages (e.g., Java, C++, Python, C#), frameworks (e.g. .NET), databases (Oracle PL/SQL or Microsoft T-SQL), operating systems (e.g., UNIX, Windows, LINUX, etc.), scripting, and real-time extract, transform load (ELT) tools and application programming interfaces (APIs).
- Relational database management systems such as Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL, etc.
- Security best practices and federal and MA state laws (Chapter 93H, 201 CMR 17.00) regarding the privacy and protection of sensitive data (e.g., GDPR, FERPA, HIPAA, PCI, etc.).

- Ten (10) years’ experience in data/information analytics, dashboards, KPIs, and process analysis, design and mapping. Excellent ability to translate stakeholder business and information management requirements into functional specifications and then construct effective business processes and analytical environments to meet the desired objectives.
- Ten (10) years’ experience supporting functional end users. Exceptional customer service skills. Ability to become a valued, strategic partner with our business unit leadership. Ability to envision and design creative solutions that result in both/and outcomes rather than black and white either/or choices.
- Strong interpersonal and presentation skills with demonstrated ability to work autonomously and effectively with diverse employees and differing opinions/positions.
- Effective written and verbal communication and negotiation skills, working with both technical and non-technical people on business process designs and highly technical and complex topics. Ability to explain complex technical concepts in plain, understandable language.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, or other computer-related field plus ten (10) years of relevant professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job listed above. Advanced degree preferred.
- Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in computer science, engineering, information systems or computer related field is preferred.
- Experience implementing and supporting Workday for HR, payroll, time and attendance, financial operations and planning, student information, in an environment having a significant number of additional on-prem and SaaS auxiliary systems.
- Understanding of the Workday business object data model, security, analytical/reporting capabilities, business process configurations, interfaces, and data load and integration procedures and tools.
- Experience with SaaS applications and integrations using Workday Web Services API, Workday Cloud Connects, Workday EIBs, Workday Studio (integration tools in Workday), RESTful Web services, ETL/ELT and iPaaS tools such as SnapLogic, etc.
- Knowledge of AWS platforms, capabilities, and services.
- ITIL basic certification.
- Experience writing technical documentation and/or preparing and delivering training sessions.
- Recognized individual within the Higher Education IT community who has a history of conference presentations on project outcomes.
- Thorough understanding of the IT field and exponential trends shaping the IT field.
- Curiosity, creativity, flexibility, and a sense of humor.
