Zymeworks is seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Associate, Protein Engineering Exploratory Research Unit who is looking to grow their career with our company. 

About the Position

This position will report to the Principal Scientist, Protein Engineering within the Exploratory Research Unit (ERU). The ERU is a new unit which will produce, purify and characterize novel protein constructs that offer the potential to be disruptive new technologies and/or therapeutic candidates for the discovery of next generation of biotherapeutics. 

The Senior Research Associate will provide hands-on support for protein engineering efforts in the discovery and development of new therapies. The ideal candidate will have a broad background in protein science, particularly optimizing and trouble-shooting protein purification. The candidate will be required to interact across functional groups and be capable of working in a highly dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Job Description and Responsibilities

  • Carries out advanced purification workflows to support to research programs and projects.
  • Devices strategies to perform biophysical characterization of protein products.
  • Manages activities considering priorities of various projects.
  • Maintains a clean, organized and operational lab.
  • Analyzes and reviews data, draws conclusions and makes recommendations for future investigations
  • Troubleshoots methods and suggests solutions to experimental problems.
  • Writes procedures for methods requiring significant technical understanding, data manipulation and calculations. Identifies opportunities to improve existing methods and develop new technologies.
  • Participates in the planning of experiments.
  • Prepares written reports and analysis of complex experiments.
  • Participates in cross-departmental activities and presents data.
  • Provides technical guidance to project staff. May review work of team members for thoroughness and completeness.
  • Seeks to understand ongoing projects through attention to scientific literature, industry publications and internally generated data and employs this understanding to improve contribution to project goals.
  • Conducts all activities in accordance with scientific standards, OH&S regulations and established policies and practices.
  • Analyze and interpret scientific data, document experiments in lab notebooks and LIMS, and multi-task with focus on detail in a fast-paced environment
  • Actively works to foster an environment of effective and collaborative working relationships across the organization.
  • Leverage strong communication skills in planning and coordinating experiments and sample hand-offs.


  • MSc in a scientific discipline and a minimum of 3 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in protein purification (e.g. IMAC, protein A/G/L, IEX, and SEC) and familiarity with AKTA system(s).
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in additional lab techniques, which should include some of the following:
                          - Protein analytical techniques: e.g. PAGE, CE-SDS,                                        UPLC-SEC, UV/VIS spectrometry, western blotting, DLS,                              MALS, ELISA, cIEF, DSC, DSF, HIC, LC-MS
                          - Experience with binding affinity techniques: e.g. SPR,                                    ITC, Kinexa, BLI.
                          - Recombinant protein expression: e.g. mammalian and                                  bacterial systems
  • Track record of patents, presentations or publications where these skills were applied.
  • Demonstrated scientific analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a member of cross-functional team. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to work effectively in a high paced, fast changing environment. Results-oriented.
  • Critical observation skills and good statistical analysis capability.
  • Advanced oral, presentation and scientific/technical writing skills.
  • Ability to present data at team and inter-departmental meetings.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
