About the Position

Zymeworks is seeking an experienced Senior Director, Health Economics, Outcomes Research and Access Policy (HEOR-AP) who is looking to grow their career with our company. This individual is responsible for generating the evidence and delivering key HEOR tools and policy approaches to support our products’ value proposition with payers and governmental and nongovernmental access policy decision-makers to optimize access, reimbursement and uptake for Zymeworks’ medicines in the US. In collaboration with the Vice President, Global Value and Access, sets or significantly influences the long-term strategic direction for HEOR and Access Policy in-line with the broader Zymeworks Commercial vision and strategy.  

This position will design, build, and lead a high-performing HEOR and Access Policy Organization.

This position will report to the Vice President, Global Value and Access and will be located in Seattle, WA or remote.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and execution for all value demonstration and HEOR plans including real world evidence generation, economic modeling, and patient-reported outcomes assessments to optimally support the value proposition of Zymeworks’ medicines to payers, patients, providers, health systems, health policymakers, and society
  • Regularly assess the global access landscape to understand the impact of changing environmental factors (e.g., competitors, US and global health reform/legislation/policy, advocacy) on HEOR, access, and value
  • Lead efforts to identify legislative and business risks and proactively develop legislative/regulatory solutions and strategies to maximize access and value for Zymeworks’ medicines and associated companion diagnostics
  • Ensures quality of integrated value strategies, evidence generation and communications plans delivering timely, relevant, and impactful data to the right access audiences
  • Build and maintain an external health economic steering committee composed of global experts in Health Technology Assessment, patient-reported outcomes, to ensure that our methods and approaches to determining the cost effectiveness of our medicines are methodologically sound and robust to external review
  • Engage and maintain strong relationships with access policymakers to deliver against Zymeworks’ access objectives
  • Define research approaches and methods to generate evidence, and effectively communicate HEOR data to credibly meet customer's diverse information needs
  • Design and execute analysis plans using administrative claims, EHR/EMR, clinico-genomic, and other databases to quantify burden and cost of illness in priority disease areas for Zymeworks
  • Conduct indirect treatment comparisons, network meta-analyses and historical comparator studies to ensure that the value of Zymeworks’ therapies is understood in the appropriate clinical context versus the appropriate reference therapies
  • Develop cost-effectiveness models as well as budget impact models at the national, health system, or hospital network level to inform budget-holder and formulary decision-making
  • Working with the Head of US Payer Marketing and Strategic Accounts, equip the Market Access organization with the resources and tools to quantify and clearly communicate the value of Zymeworks’ platform and medicines
  • Lead the HEOR strategy for, development of, submissions to, and interactions with payer groups, key institutions, regulatory authorities, the HEOR scientific community and industry, maintaining expert knowledge of industry and policy trends that may impact US patient access and reimbursement for Zymeworks’ medicines
  • Convene an internal working group to identify synergies across patient advocacy, medical affairs, corporate affairs, and commercial to support access policy objectives
  • Partner with Patient Advocacy to identify opportunities for patient-centered evidence development through patient and caregiver burden studies, patient-reported outcomes, patient preference, and other studies
  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs to ensure credible communication of HEOR findings in the appropriate external forums and publications
  • Working with Corporate Affairs, formulate, communicate, and advocate Zymeworks’ position on access and public policy issues affecting health economic evaluations, value-based pricing, and access, including engaging the health economic, reimbursement, value, and access sub teams of various industry and advocacy organizations and CMS
  • Characterize clinical and patient outcomes in terms of economic value for health systems and for society, deploying innovative approaches to data analysis and presentation
  • Establish and maintain cross-functional collaborative relationships & strategic alignment with internal partners including the Marketing Team, Payer Marketing Team, Market Access Field Team, launch management team and others as appropriate to identify, integrate and align HEOR strategies and execute tactics
  • Analyze and clearly articulate health economic and patient- and caregiver-reported outcomes approaches for clinical and non-clinical / observational research studies to optimize value from health system, patient, and caregiver perspectives, collaborating with clinical, biostatistical, regulatory, medical, and commercial teams (e.g., on protocol and analytic plans, results interpretation, CSR development) to maximize the utility of patient-reported outcomes for value, access, and product differentiation
  • Serves as an internal Subject Matter Expert regarding epidemiologic, health economic, and psychometric methods and results interpretation, clinical outcome assessment methods, regulatory requirements to obtain clinical outcome assessments on labels
  • Operate with the utmost integrity and in compliance with all laws, regulations, and policies that govern the conduct of Zymeworks' activities.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Advanced degree (such as MS, MPH, PharmD, MD or PhD) in epidemiology, health economics, health services research, or health policy
  • 10+ years of demonstrated ability conducting health- and pharmacoeconomic, epidemiological, health services, health policy, health program evaluation or health services research (Preferred)
  • Experience in design of clinical studies with HEOR and PRO endpoints
  • Experience in analysis of claims, EHR/EMR, and other databases
  • Experience in economic model development to assess the value of medical products
  • Demonstrated ability to hire, develop, mentor, and retain a world-class HEOR and Access Policy team to drive results
  • Ability to engage external policy stakeholders, industry coalitions, and collaborate with legislative and state government representatives on issues of reimbursement, access, and health policy
  • The candidate should have demonstrated scientific leadership, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications based on real world data studies, economic modelling, and patient-reported outcomes assessment, and ensuring scientific quality and integrity through development of rigorous study research proposals, protocols, analysis plans, reports, and publications
  • The candidate should be capable of distilling the essential elements of complex issues for senior internal and external stakeholders
  • Proven track record of fostering accountability and cross-functional teamwork
  • Excellent research, analytical, organizational, economic, financial, and quantitative problem-solving skills
  • Oncology/hematology and/or rare disease experience preferred
