The Role: SonTek a Xylem brand seeks to hire an Application Engineer. This role will coordinate Application related efforts for the Sales and Marketing of SonTek Acoustic Doppler products to Institutions, government agencies and consulting firms involved in hydrologic/hydrometric/oceanographic research and engineering. 

Essential Duties/Principal Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate Application related efforts for the Sales and Marketing of SonTek Acoustic Doppler products to institutions, government agencies and consulting firms involved in water velocity (hydrology/hydrometric/oceanographic) research and engineering internationally
  • Act as primary contact on technical issues and development for key SonTek customers.
  • Position will require writing technical papers and application notes, and travel to conferences and exhibitions as well as customer sites internationally.
  • Provide feedback to R&D engineering team for ongoing and future hardware/software development.
  • Applicant must be capable of discussing ongoing research projects with leading scientists, engineers, and researchers around the world.
  • Lead application-based instrument function and quality testing for firmware and software development of SonTek systems, as well as hardware developments (as needed). This includes developing test plans/strategies, managing test hardware and inventory, building and maintaining test sites, extensive field work, partnering with customers with existing infrastructure for testing, and working closely with Product Management, Manufacturing Engineering/Production, and R&D teams to release product improvements and new products by set deadlines.
  • Attend relevant exhibitions, seminars, meetings and training events to maintain a high level of expertise in the industry, to maintain relationships with industry peers, and to further instrument development.
  • Act as a high-level central knowledge base for Xylem internal teams (i.e. for Technical Support, Technical Sales teams, Product Management)
  • Collaborate with leading scientists, engineers, and researchers around the world on advanced research topics involving SonTek systems and acoustic technology.
  • Collaborate with other companies in the industry on technical projects/developments with the goal of providing an improved customer experience and to drive mutual sales.
  • Provide technical support and travel to customer sites when issues cannot otherwise be resolved by other internal teams (Technical Support or Sales teams)
  • Develop appropriate materials to train customers and sales representatives in the function and use of SonTek products.
  • Guide/assist in the preparation and planning for product advertising, tradeshows, and distribution
  • Assisting the product Managers and sales staff in responding to general inquiries
  • Onsite product demonstrations
  • Providing high level application feedback to customers
  • Reviewing scientific data and making recommendations
  • Writing website content and application notes as appropriate
  • Visiting customer sites either with an outside Representative or directly
  • Providing market feedback to the organization, provide in-depth analysis and insights into the global water hydrology market to help promote/improve Xylem Analytics products
  • Keep sales, marketing, and other company personnel informed on competitive activity and potential new business opportunities
  • Preparing monthly reports
  • Extensive travel is an expectation, both domestic and international, in the range of 20-50% of full time effort
  • Participation in Xylem Watermark volunteer activities

Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities, License/Certification:

  • Demonstrable technical expertise in the form of peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, white papers, or reviews provided by people the candidate has previously engaged with on a technical level
  • Exceptional writing and presentation skills, including full competency with Power Point and other presentation media.
  • Formal technical training or experience, preferably related to hydrology/oceanography and acoustics.
  • Knowledge or direct experience in projects involving river/ocean current measurement, discharge, turbulence, flow monitoring, using modern acoustic Doppler techniques. Previous technical sales or support experience preferred
  • The ability to develop deep product knowledge for a wide range of products in our current portfolio.
  • Must become an expert in the function and application of the SonTek product base.
  • Ability to give presentation (virtual and in person) to 50+ to customers and potential customers at conferences, industry trade shows, company sites and customer sites.
  • Analysis and management of data generated from our technologies.
  • Ability to understand and communicate customer needs to product management and engineering for product development.
  • Well organized and self-motivated.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and to appropriately prioritize, and reprioritize as necessary.
  • Ability to shift gears and focus effectively in a fast paced business environment.
  • Conscientious with respect to deadlines.
  • Collaborative team player.
