The Role: 
Under the leadership of the assigned Regional Vice President, the Area General Manager (AGM) will hold primary responsibility for the reliable delivery of PurePipe and Visenti work in their sub-region, and will be accountable for achieving budget commitments, meeting the needs of clients in their assigned sub-region, and coaching and mentoring the delivery team in their sub-region. Collaborating closely with partners in related areas (e.g. Business Development, Product Management, Continuous Improvement), the AGM will plan, organize, direct and implement comprehensive strategies and programs for the delivery of PurePipe and Visenti projects within the assigned sub-region; provide support as required to other AIA brands; and provide direction and oversight of the activities and staff of the sub-region’s Project Delivery Group. Crucially, the AGM is a ‘leader-doer’ role and will continue to play an operational role to remain grounded in the realities of our business. S/he will also oversee the inspection and coordination of the work of contractors engaged in the delivery of projects; ensure the sub-region as a whole meets the budget goals established, and perform related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties/Principal Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the P&L of the sub-region inclusive of the development of the sub-region’s annual budget, and tracking and reporting of performance versus budget
  • Manages and directs the development, implementation and evaluation of plans, policies, systems and procedures to achieve quarterly and annual goals, objectives and work standards
  • Delivers weekly regional statistics, metrics and reports to the Regional Vice President and/or Vice President of Americas Delivery, making necessary adjustments to achieve goals
  • Creates, implements and monitors a strategic plan facilitating growth within the assigned sub-region that does not jeopardize the quality of projects
  • Plans, organizes, controls, integrates and evaluates the work of the assigned sub-region; while coordinating with supervisors to develop, implement and monitor project delivery plans and objectives focused on achieving the region’s/RVP’s established plan for forward growth and success
  • Lead, manage, mentor and develop teams by providing clear objectives and encouraging staff to be innovative, and to become the most recognized pipeline stewards in the industry
  • Consistently engage with the Business Development team to provide operational, product and technical input and expertise insuring client satisfaction and successful delivery of projects
  • Consistently work to successfully recruit and retain talent through efficient processes and sustainable people-based programs (i.e. compensation practices, effective performance review processes, training and development initiatives, succession planning, etc.); as well as, establish performance expectations, metrics and personal development targets, provides coaching for performance improvement/development collaborating with Human Resources to initiate appropriate action in accordance with Xylem policy
  • Regularly review and recommend compensation and bonus amounts for all positions within the region ensuring internal equity and appropriate recognition for high performers
  • Provide day-to-day leadership working with project delivery supervisors and staff to ensure a high performance, customer service-oriented work environment which supports achieving the region’s and AIA’s mission, strategic plan, objectives and values
  • Work directly with project delivery staff to ensure quality assurance and control standards are adhered to through project lifecycle, successful project delivery, and that overall region is operating within budget
  • Works closely with business development to review and negotiate agreements and contracts with affiliates and sub-contractors and communicates details to project delivery team
  • Collaborate with RVP to design a system and create a repository to store and manage detailed records of sub-regional activities, plans and result

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Strong commercial understanding of the business with proven ability to translate business strategy into day-to-day delivery
  • Natural team player who is committed to leading through collaboration
  • Demonstrated technical understanding of pipeline management through application in previous position; as well as theory, principles, practices and techniques of engineering as they apply to water and wastewater conveyance systems
  • Understanding of Federal, state and local laws and regulations as they apply to assigned region; as well as the discernment to understand when to escalate matters to legal for review and advice
  • Analyze and make sound recommendations on complex management and administrative issues
  • Experience preparing clear, concise and comprehensive correspondence, reports, proposals, studies, recommendations and other written materials
  • Excellent oral presentation skills with clear and logical messaging to internal and external clients
  • Proven ability to develop and implement goals, objectives, policies, procedures, work standards and management controls
  • Proven track record of exercising sound, independent judgment within general policy guidelines
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of management, contractors, vendors, employees and the public
  • Ability to exercise tact, discretion and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive, complex and confidential issues and situations
  • Comfortable and successful working under pressure, under intensive deadlines, competing demands and tasks, as well as adaptable to change

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from a four-year university with a major in engineering, or closely related field
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the delivery of complex water and wastewater projects
  • At least three years’ experience working in a management capacity preferred
  • Solid engineering background along with strong business acumen
  • A certificate of registration as a Professional Engineer (Civil Engineer) issued by the local state/country authority a plus (or the ability to obtain in 12 months)
  • Must have previous experience and accountability for cost control and profit targets and managing a budget
  • Experience with developing and managing programs, scheduling and implementation with ability to plan, assign, direct and coordinate a variety of functional specialties with overlapping work areas

  • Must be able to travel as required throughout North America (including Canada) up to 30%
