Systems Engineer
Description
The Role:
This position will serve as a Systems Engineer on a small multi-disciplinary engineering team for the Integrated Systems and Services business unit and contributes technically to the full product lineup. The position is primarily accountable for the design and development of customer integration projects and products, but will also be asked to perform sales support, production support and customer support to ensure project success. This role reports directly to the Engineering Manager – Integration, R&D, YSI.
Essential Duties/Principal Responsibilities:
Product Development and Sustaining Efforts
- Contribute to the development of new products, through collaboration with other engineers within the team, Product Management, and the suppliers. Similarly update product design to improve or add new capability to existing products.
- Creation of engineering documentation, controlled drawings, part number creation and support content for manufacturing assembly processes in alignment with YSI Design to Release process.
- Be aware of new developments in the industry, the changing needs of customers, and contribute to developing ideas for new products.
Custom System Design
- Work closely with the Sales team to develop a custom solution for customers. Turn the needs of the customer into a system design, which will work reliably, and the Production team will be able to build and deliver.
- As needed, work directly with customers to develop a solution.
- Add new capabilities to a pre-designed product, in order to meet a one-time need for a customer.
- Generate system descriptions, diagrams. Manage BOM, create part drawings and release new part numbers as required.
Sales, Production, Customer Support
- Assist Sales team through the quoting process, including early evaluation of customer needs and pre-project feasibility studies leading to estimations of time, resources, and cost.
- Provide oversight and support to Production team through integration and testing for customer orders.
- Work with Customer service team in support of installation/deployment, product usage and follow on support.
- As needed, aid the Tech Support team in resolving technical issues involving deployed systems.
Other responsibilities may include:
- Assure the accuracy, clarity, internal integrity, consistency, and timeliness of all technical information submitted.
- Drive continuous improvements into engineering processes and policies.
- Provide interpretation, guidance and strategies on technologies and methodologies affecting product approvals, development, and continued product compliance.
- Assessing and evaluating new and existing technologies that are opportunities or threats.
- Work closely with relevant functional areas to achieve overall product development success (operations/manufacturing and quality, marketing and sales, customer service, finance, and technical support).
- Assume other activities and responsibilities as directed.
- Participation in Xylem Watermark volunteer activities
Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities, License/Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
- 3 years of hands-on engineering work experience in a multidiscipline R&D environment.
- Experience with water quality, quantity, meteorological sensors, and platforms is a plus.
- Familiarity with marine environment, and system deployment in such conditions, is a plus.
- Minimum of 1 year CAD experience. SolidWorks preferred but not required.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects.
- Resourcefulness in finding a solution, and willingness to learn skills beyond the core discipline to get things done.
- Strong analytical reasoning, and team interaction skills.
- Poise, good judgment, and confidence to represent the Company.
- Ability to work with a diverse workforce and customer base.
- Ensures compliance with Company's and regulatory policies and procedures.
