Database Administrator (Oracle & MS SQL Server)

Xcelerate Solutions seeks a Database Administrator (DBA) to be responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, security, and performance tuning of enterprise-class relational database management systems, specializing in both Oracle Database and Microsoft SQL Server. Operating within a highly secure, high-availability environment, the candidate will ensure data integrity, maximum uptime, and robust recovery frameworks for critical business and operational systems.

This role requires a seasoned administrator with deep technical expertise in dual-database ecosystems. Working closely with system administrators, software engineers, and cybersecurity personnel, the successful candidate will apply industry best practices and security hardening guidelines to safeguard enterprise data assets while maintaining peak database performance. Key Responsibilities

In accordance with established technical standards and data governance guidelines, the Database Administrator will perform the following duties:

1. Database Administration & Maintenance

  • Install, configure, patch, and upgrade multi-platform database environments (Oracle 19c/21c and Microsoft SQL Server 2016 through 2022) on both Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Perform routine database maintenance tasks, including index rebuilds, statistics updates, tablespace management, and database consistency checks (DBCC).
  • Manage database storage structures, forecasting capacity requirements and planning for physical storage expansion.

2. High Availability & Disaster Recovery

  • Design, implement, and maintain comprehensive backup and recovery strategies utilizing Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) and native MS SQL Server backup utilities.
  • Configure and support high-availability and disaster recovery solutions, including Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), Oracle Data Guard, Microsoft SQL Server AlwaysOn Availability Groups, and database mirroring.
  • Perform regular, documented disaster recovery drill testings to verify Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) are consistently met.

3. Performance Monitoring & Tuning

  • Monitor database health and performance using enterprise tools such as Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) Cloud Control, SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), and SQL Server Profiler.
  • Analyze execution plans, write automated system scripts, and optimize complex SQL queries, PL/SQL, and T-SQL code to minimize system bottlenecks.
  • Implement database resource management practices to optimize memory allocation, CPU utilization, and I/O throughput across mixed transactional (OLTP) and analytical (OLAP) workloads.

4. Security Hardening & Compliance

  • Implement security policies and access controls, ensuring strict adherence to the principle of least privilege.
  • Apply Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) and database security checklists to harden database configurations.
  • Manage database encryption at rest (Transparent Data Encryption - TDE) and in transit, configure database auditing, and remediate vulnerability scan findings.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Database Administration, or a related field (equivalent professional experience may be considered).
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience as a Database Administrator managing both Oracle and MS SQL Server database environments in an enterprise setting.
  • Proven experience configuring high-availability database solutions (AlwaysOn, RAC, Data Guard).
  • Hands-on experience executing database backup, recovery, patching, and version upgrades.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Expert proficiency in SQL, T-SQL, and PL/SQL scripting.
  • Strong scripting skills in PowerShell, Bash, or Python to automate administrative and monitoring tasks.
  • Deep understanding of database security standards, user management, and encryption protocols.
  • Soft Skills:
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose complex system-level problems under pressure.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional technical teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience migrating databases from on-premises environments to secure cloud architectures (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure SQL Managed Instance).
  • Familiarity with database virtualization technologies and containerized database systems (Docker/Kubernetes).
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development environment with integrated DevSecOps pipelines.
  • Experience administering PostgreSQL, MySQL, or NoSQL database platforms.

Certifications

To meet technical and cybersecurity compliance baselines, candidates must possess or be willing to obtain:

1. Cybersecurity Baseline Certification (Required)

Active DoD 8570.01-M / DoD 8140 Information Assurance Technical (IAT) Level II certification (or higher). Acceptable certifications include:

  • CompTIA Security+ CE (highly preferred)
  • GIAC Security Essentials (GSEC)
  • Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP)
  • CCNA-Security

2. Professional/Technical Certifications (Preferred but not required)

  • Oracle Database Administration Certified Professional (OCP)
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300) or legacy Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA): SQL Server

Security & Clearance Requirements

Due to the secure nature of the enterprise environment and associated federal mandates:

  • Work Status Allowable: U.S. citizenship
  • Minimum Clearance to Start: Public Trust or Favorably Adjudicated Secret Clearance 
  • Compliance: Must strictly adhere to government cybersecurity policies, operations security (OPSEC) requirements, and system access regulations.
