TRISO-X, LLC is seeking a Fire Protection Engineer responsible for providing technical capabilities to ensure TRISO-X Fuel Fabrication Facility materials are processed, stored, and handled safely to minimize the potential for fires/explosions, and personnel and the public/environment are protected in accordance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requirements in 10 CFR 70. This role will focus heavily on facility/process design and development and implementation of safety and compliance programs and procedures for a new nuclear fuel fabrication facility, and then the role will transition from design/licensing support through construction and start-up/commissioning to supporting day-to-day facility operations.

Responsibilities:
  • Define the fire and life safety basis for manufacturing and support operations by evaluating and analyzing buildings, equipment, processes, and procedures; implement and facilitate Fire Protection programs and procedures; and monitor the effectiveness of Fire Protection items relied on for safety (IROFS), limits, controls, systems, and equipment.
  • Develop/review/revise Fire Hazard Analysis documents to identify and evaluate potential fire hazards and exposure scenarios for normal operations and process upsets of TRISO-X fuel fabrication processes and TRISO-X Facility operations, including processes involved in storage of flammable/combustible chemicals/gases, producing TRISO fuel forms, quality control activities, recycling/recovery of process materials, managing effluents and waste materials, and conducting maintenance activities.
  • Develop/review/revise compliance plans that demonstrate Life Safety code requirements are being met.
  • Develop/review/revise calculations by executing computer codes and models to support Fire Protection evaluations.
  • Develop/review/revise/implement safety and compliance programs and procedures.
  • Participate in Process Hazards Analysis activities with multidiscipline teams to identify potential criticality, radiological, chemical, and fire/explosion hazards to support the Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA) process.
  • Consult with and advise operations, maintenance, and engineering personnel on the Fire Protection impacts of new or proposed changes to processes, procedures, and facility designs/modifications.
  • Participate in design reviews.
  • Conduct surveillances, inspections, walk-downs, investigations, and audits/assessments of manufacturing and support operations, and unusual incidents to ensure compliance with approved procedures and safety bases.
  • Develop/revise/deliver Fire Protection training to operations, maintenance, and other personnel.
  • Develop/revise Fire Protection postings and operator aids to implement administrative controls to ensure they are unambiguous, easily understood, and readily achievable.
  • Provide support to the emergency response team. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
Minimum Education/Qualifications:
  • Typically, ten plus years of experience in the fire protection field with emphasis on process fire safety for nuclear manufacturing, or a similar highly regulated industry such as chemical manufacturing.
  • Comprehensive understanding of fire science and fire dynamics:  fire and smoke behavior, fire growth, combustion, material properties, and heat transfer.
  • Experience using CFAST or other computer codes and models to define potential fire scenarios and consequences.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 801 or equivalent, and experience developing Fire Hazard Analysis documents.
  • Working knowledge of relevant fire protection codes and standards, occupancy and hazard classifications per NFPA 101, NFPA 400 and International Building Code; fire test methods; and the interpretation of fire test data. Understanding and experience applying regulatory requirements, codes/standards, and guidance.
  • Working knowledge of fire suppression, detection, and other active fire protection systems, including selection, design, installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of electrical classification per NFPA 497.
  • Working knowledge of evacuation movement, human response to fire cues, and egress analysis.
  • Experience communicating technical information effectively both orally and in writing to a wide variety of audiences, ranging from engineering, operations, and maintenance personnel to regulators and management.
  • Experience developing written procedures to implement regulatory and code/standard requirements.  
Compensation:  
As required by Maryland and other applicable state law, X Energy, LLC (X-energy) lists the expected compensation range for a publicly advertised job opportunity based upon the job requirements (e.g. education/training, experience, skill sets, etc.).  Individual candidates who meet the job requirements for the posted position will be offered a salary within this range based on their respective levels of education/training, experience, and other qualifications unique to them.  Salary ranges may vary based on the specific office location and region referenced in the posting to take into consideration differences in cost of living and may not be reflective of all regions.  Please note that compensation ranges listed for US job postings reflect base salary only and do not include benefits or other incentives.  A reasonable estimate for this position at the level of experience required is: 
Engineer IV, Fire Protection: $104,400 to $133,400
