Lead Underwriter/Actuary, Data Analytics

Scope of Position:

The position of the Lead Underwriter/Actuary is to capture many duties across the department and Benefits Practice to further elevate and propel Woodruff Sawyer in complex analytics. Expanding upon existing platforms, models, templates, and processes to fit the overall direction of the department and vision of Woodruff-Sawyer Employee Benefits.

 

This individual will be seen as a leader and role model to junior analysts and to all Employee Benefits stakeholders. Will be a key part of the service model integration by working alongside all sales teams, service teams, clients, and vendor partners to support data analytics modeling, output, client management, data management, and ad-hoc project-based work.

 

Management and Department Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the various templates and tools used internally for projection analysis, including the oversight of the implied methodologies contained to continuously create, adjust or rework depending on industry or organizational needs
    • Self-insured renewal projection models and methodology
    • IBNP/IBNR tools, templates, and reserve methodology
    • M&A tools, templates, and methodology
    • Ancillary projection models
    • Experience reporting tools and templates
    • Fully-insured renewal projections, and methodology
    • Self-insured feasibility studies
  • Identify areas to create and manage various ad hoc models and expertise
    • Claim discount reprice models and methodology
    • Advanced Stop Loss risk models
    • PBM consortium models
    • Plan design calculators
    • Trend, margin, and credibility models
    • Assist Data Analytic leadership in pricing of applicable vendor programs and point solutions for clients
  • Assist Data Analytics leadership in creation of training manuals and methodology
  • Aid in the procurement of new business
    • Creating innovative solutions for prospects with disparate data
    • Present any findings alongside the sales lead to assist in new business sales

 

Client Lead Responsibilities:

  • Perform underwriting/actuarial claim and risk projections, working alongside an assigned analyst to complete all necessary analytic processes
  • Present and educate client benefit renewals, risk profiles, actuarial projections, and any relevant client data
  • Identify and recommend innovative solutions for complex, self-insured clients

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Prior experience with actuarial software/tools/models
  • Proficient ability to work with internal and external C-Suite leaders
  • Working and applicable knowledge of all funding platforms including fully-insured, self-insured, and alternative funding
  • Above average competency in Microsoft Office software, and other company and discipline-specific software applications required
  • Superb organizational and time management skills
  • Superior presentation skills required
  • Excellent math skills required

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Medical and pharmacy actuarial pricing required
  • 7+ years of experience or more preferred
  • Ability to take initiative, problem-solve, multi-task, and work well under pressure
  • Effective communications skills both written and verbal for interface with clients, colleagues, and vendors required
  • Ability to work and succeed in a team environment
