About your role:

WRI globally, has deep experience in the climate resilience planning and is widely recognized as a leader on climate change mitigation and resilience building. We focus our work on the most vulnerable urban communities and practice a bottom-up approach when it comes to developing climate mitigation frameworks. We are implementing climate resilience through Nature Based Solutions program in Kochi as part of WRIs Global Cities4Foress program. Cities4Forests helps cities around the world to connect with and invest in inner forests (such as city trees and urban parks), nearby forests (such as green corridors and watersheds), and faraway forests (such as tropical and boreal forests). We encourage our cities to better conserve, manage, and restore these forests, as well as provide technical assistance to align local policy, share knowledge, and access peer-to-peer learning and communication activities to take climate action together. The program in Kochi focuses on developing a guidance document to build a climate resilient Kochi as well as piloting Nature Based Solutions to mitigate the impact of heat stress in urban areas.

WRI India is seeking an Intern for this Cities4Forests project work housed in the Sustainable Cities Team in India. He/She will support the implementation of the pilot projects under the Cities4Forest program in Kochi. The intern will manage the development of green spaces in various selected locations in Kochi over a period of 2 months. The tasks will include assessment of the selected pilot locations, active coordination of the land preparation and planting activities, discussion with stakeholders to develop a sustainable maintenance scheme and documentation of the landscape development activities.

How your day will unfold: 

The Intern, Urban Climate Resilience will undertake the following managerial work
• Surveying of selected sites for developing green spaces
• Discussion with stakeholders including local leaders, ward councilors, residence associations, NGOs and institutions for developing sites and maintenance
• Develop innovative implementation models to incorporate maximum public/stakeholder participation
• Extensive co-ordination of work on ground for landscape development
• Support selection of tree species for planting at site
• Regular field visits for monitoring developed green spaces
• Documentation of landscape development process including a photo library
• Submit daily update report to the project manager
• Execution of any other managerial work as part of the Cities4Forests program in Kochi as and when required

Qualifications and Requirements we seek:

• Graduation (pursuing also)
• Ability to communicate fluently in Malayalam
• Background in Botany, Forestology, Engineering or Environmental Science is highly recommended.
• Hands-on experience in execution of projects is highly recommended
• Demonstrated ability to work extensively on on-ground
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently as well as part of a team
• Proficiency in MS Office – Word, Excel & PowerPoint
• General awareness of environment and climate domain – key issues, events and updates
• Excellent/ Strong research, interpersonal/ written/ communication skills
• Ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner
• Ability to work calmly and enthusiastically under high pressure and rough field conditions
• Ability to co-ordinate team work at field level
• Ability to think creatively

Stipend: 25000 Per Month
Location: Kochi, India
Duration: 2 Months
