Energy Research Analyst

Data Analysis & Technical Research Jakarta, Indonesia, Indonesia Grade: 2

Program Overview

WRI Indonesia's energy program works to advance reliable, clean energy and reduce carbon emissions, while balancing the need for economic advancement. WRI Indonesia believe that sustainable development highlights the need for integrated approaches to finding solutions that are aligned with the challenge of achieving economic, social and environmental goals that are often interlinked. Therefore, the energy program aims to work across disciplines with the cities team, climate team and the ocean to combine low carbon technology systems, quantitative models, and other policy-making decision tools to achieve and support key national initiatives in Indonesia such as the acceleration of the achievement of 23% renewable energy targets and Indonesia net zero ambition.

One of our flagship initiatives is the Clean Energy Investment Accelerator (CEIA) which is co-led by Allotrope Partners, the World Resources Institute, and the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory. CEIA is an innovative public-private partnership initiative that advances policy and financing frameworks to meet the clean energy needs, both electricity and heat, of commercial and industrial energy consumers. We believe that as the largest energy consumer group, the commercial and industrial sector could use their buying power to drive energy transition through policy advocacy, business model and technology adoption.

The Climate Solution Partnership (CSP) is a joint-initiative between HSBC, WRI and WWF to help climate solutions become commercial reality and have a real-world impact. It is powered by USD 100 millions of philanthropic funding from HSBC. Since 2021, we already ran the project to reach KPI such as delivering technical assistance for five companies and industrial estates, developing policy recommendation with the government, and helping utility company to diversify their green power product. Through CSP, we aim to realize a real transaction of technology by the most prominent company under our guidance.

Through Sustainable Energy Transition Indonesia (SETI) project, WRI Indonesia aims to build our institutional knowledge on clean heat solution and energy efficiency measures to strengthen our impact in industry decarbonization issue. We will focus one several targeted industrial sectors to gain in depth understanding about each sector’s challenges, opportunities and pathway to maximize emission reduction from the energy use.

Supporting Indonesia’s pledge on Net Zero Emission, the energy and SBTi teams are seeking to advance private sectors contribution towards net zero, at any scale of business. With our partners, we instill the SBTi framework, then facilitate the development and implementation of decarbonization strategy for companies. This long-term effort requires both policy and technical knowledge, combined with WRI’s convening power, to ultimately move the key stakeholders to take actions and achieve the intended emission reduction.
