Position Overview
West Health Institute (WHI) is looking for a Director, Data Science and Analytics. The successful candidate will work closely with teams of health care researchers, clinicians, business leaders, and policy researchers to support a portfolio of initiatives related to advancing successful aging and lowering healthcare costs. As a hands-on leader of our Data Science team, you will be called on to lead a group of engineers, informatics and data scientist engaged in planning, design, and execution of data related projects that are developed by West Health Institute, Policy Center, and Leadership in consultation with the Director, Data Science and Analytics. Working within an AWS-hosted secure data platform established by WHI, you will lead the execution of analytical plans, generate data sets, and provide timely and high value products (e.g., reports, papers, visualizations, and dashboards). You will apply your knowledge and expertise to lead and/or support projects that leverage diverse healthcare data sources (e.g., clinical EMR data, healthcare claims data, and population-based survey data) and seek out new and novel approaches to interrogate, combine, and mine such data. As an expert in data analytics, you will actively contribute to the statistical analysis, interpretation of results and communicate findings to internal and external stakeholders. As Director, you will also serve as a thought leader and partner for c-suite leaders responsible for West Health’s Clinical, Strategy, and Policy initiatives.
Responsibilities:
- Plan and oversee the data science team activities and budget based on strategic priorities.
- Manage timelines, deliverables, and demonstrate value/impact for data science efforts.
- Partner with internal teams to help develop and deliver on (data portion of) projects in a timely, impactful manner.
- Work closely with the Institute Privacy Officer and Security Officer to ensure compliance with internal policies and all State / Federal laws governing data.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to leverage Data Science resources to maximize impact.
- Advance a portfolio of Data Science technologies and products to provide new research directions and support existing projects.
- Develop high value partnerships to drive innovation, maximize impact, and establish West Health as a leader.
- Train and develop a team of data scientist, engineers, and analysts with modern data processing and analysis skills.
- Maintain and expand successful data science Internship Program and partnerships with local universities.
- Communicate effectively with executives, partners, and stakeholders.
- Be a role model and maintain a positive atmosphere to foster team building, shared accountability, and success across a diverse team of researchers, analysts, data scientists, and engineers.
- Actively manage and integrate third-party teams and consultants to gain maximum value from collaborations.
Requirements
- Advanced degree in statistics, health services research, data science or related field
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a managerial role in healthcare (e.g. healthcare system, provider organization, health plan, state or federal healthcare entity, or healthcare research organization)
- Must thrive in a fast paced and results driven environment.
- Experience working with healthcare data sets; Commercial Insurance, Medicare and or Medicaid claims data, preferred.
- Experience working with clinical / EMR data is a plus.
- Mastery of statistical concepts and analytical methods
- “Customer Service” mentality in leading data science team in meeting needs of internal/external partners.
- Ability to communicate results to diverse set of stakeholders.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Programming experience in Python, R, SQL, and Tableau a big plus
- Familiarity with Linux and AWS, a plus
- Must be up to date with COVID-19 Vaccinations and booster shots.
Compensation and benefits
The estimated compensation range for this position is $175,000 - $200,000.
