Veterinary Technician - Ophthalmology

Westford Veterinary Emergency Referral Center is looking to add a compassionate and skilled Veterinary Technician to our Ophthalmology team. The target schedule for this role is M-TH 7:30am to 5:00pm; availability for this schedule is required.

Veterinary Technician - Opthalmology
Westford, Massachusetts
$27.00-$32.00/hour depending on experience, licensure and availability.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Checking in appointments
- Ensuring referral records have been sent and uploaded for review.
- Obtaining a thorough history from owners.
- Performing ophthalmic testing
- Dilation of patients upon approval
- Restraint for Ophthalmology examinations (when no TA present)
- Starting discharge notes and appointment discharges.
- Filling medications/prescriptions and discussing with the owner.
- Owner call backs, and documenting conversation in medical record.
- Monitoring the ophthalmology e-mail and communication board.
- Client communication/education.
- Performing ERG
- Performing retrobulbar blocks
- Obtaining blood-pressure measurements.
- Venipuncture, cystocentesis
- Administering IM, SQ and IV injections.
- Pre-operative and post-operative patient care.
- Surgery discharges.
- Monitoring of patients during sedated procedures.
- Scrub nurse duties.
- Cleaning surgical instruments.
- Cleaning of exam rooms/treatment rooms.
- Stocking of exam rooms/treatment rooms.
- Diff quick staining for cytology slides.
- Surgical preparation of patient for ophthalmology procedures.
- Sterile instrument/OR set up for surgery.
- Doggles/Rex Specs Fittings.
- Anesthesia duties
- Knowledge of anesthesia drugs
- Familiar with common drug protocols
- Use of paralytics, train of four and ventilation.
- Common anesthetic concerns and troubleshooting
- CRI calculations and use of vasopressors ect. Under anesthesia.
- Familiarity with IV fluid use.

REQUIREMENTS
- Prior experience and skill in ophthalmology highly desired but can be taught for the right candidate
- Certified or Licensed Veterinary Technician in Massachusetts or eligible for transfer highly preferred
- Prior experience with anesthesia required, experience with solo monitoring preferred
- Able to efficiently and effectively follow instructions/directions.
- Follow through with assigned tasks.
- Detail-oriented.
- Able to take the initiative to support the doctor and department
- Able to communicate efficiently in a respectful manner with clients and co-workers
- Learning environment encouraged, although respect must be maintained.
- Ensure the pet and clients have a positive overall experience.
- Fear-free methods utilized
- Limit cell phone use to work-related tasks during appointment/surgery times.
