The Creative Director is responsible for ensuring that all creative design work meets client needs for effectiveness and is viewed as leading edge in the marketplace. Manages a team of Art Directors and Graphic Designers; directs complex projects that involve planning, research, and development of art, layouts, and overall campaigns for use in media to promote the sale of products and services. This work includes client consultation, concept development, collaborating on editorial content, and execution of production art, all while ensuring consistency of brand while meeting marketing needs and objectives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Ensures that the most recent design innovations and trends in health care and other specific content areas are being infused into the Company’s products and offerings, which include print publications and various digital media such as email, webpages, and video. Maintains knowledge of current best practices around advertising trends, branding guidelines, user experience, software upgrades, production methods, and prepress techniques.
Represents the company’s creative capabilities in client-facing presentations and sales opportunities. Oversees related contributions to RFPs and other sales-focused work.
Directs a team of Art Directors and Graphic Designers who work closely with clients including hospitals and health plans to develop effective designs to meet their marketing objectives. Regularly reviews designs developed by direct reports.
Provides management support to Art Directors and Graphic Designers, including performance management and coaching. Meets regularly with team to review work quality, client satisfaction, productivity metrics, and progress toward performance and professional development goals. Ensures staff accountability against defined performance standards for working with internal teams as well as clients.
Proactively initiates ongoing improvement methodologies for design development, maintenance, and innovation.
Achieves high levels of client satisfaction with quality of design. Reviews client feedback and identifies where improvement is required. Establishes performance measures tied to client satisfaction for all team members, and ensures that processes are developed to support achievement of these measures.
Serves as a role model and leader in taking a cross-functional team approach to serving clients, one that extends beyond departmental boundaries. Works collaboratively with other employees throughout the creative development process and keeps them apprised of issues and project status.
Suggests and/or determines the design approach and format of projects to effectively meet client objectives while remaining within designated budget and timeframe. Establishes timelines to ensure proper review of projects before final deadlines.
Oversees management of department vendors and freelancers.
Maintains thorough understanding of print production and postal regulations to ensure that materials are produced and mailed with 100% compliance. Applies a trained eye for color necessary to assess the accuracy of color reproduction and meet press standards.
Follows file management procedures to insure proper backup of materials.
Uses design tools and related programs skillfully and efficiently, including programs such as InDesign, WordPress, Quark, Illustrator, PhotoShop, and Flight Check.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Education and/or Experience
B.A. or B.S. in Visual Arts, Communications or similar from four (4) year college or technical school plus seven (7) years or more related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
