Medscape, a division of WebMD, develops and hosts physician portals and related mobile applications that make it easier for physicians and healthcare professionals to access clinical reference sources, stay abreast of the latest clinical information, learn about new treatment options, earn continuing medical education credits and communicate with peers.

MedSims current Simulation Learning Designers are seeking a Simulation Learning Designer to fill the position created by a current team member leaving the company.

The Simulation Learning Designer (SLD) serves as part curriculum designer, part business analyst, and part content developer. The SLD brings together simulation design technology and subject-matter expert content to create a Virtual Patient Simulation (VPS) program. The SLD uses proprietary software and authoring tools to create VPSs, ensuring that simulations align with program learning objectives.



  • Develop Virtual Patient Simulations based on determined knowledge gaps and learning objectives
  • Demonstrate consulting skills when interacting with partners and subject matter experts, and other stakeholders
  • Determine appropriate VPS solutions based on the learning needs of the audience and grant
  • With little direction and minimal assistance from SMEs and MedSims Scientific Director, develop Virtual Patient Simulations
  • Liaise with the Project Manager to meet all deadlines and provide updates on progress
  • Manage concurrent projects, internal and external, and associated timelines and deliverables
  • Identify and develop new procedures and techniques to improve training and/ or operations effectiveness in performing tasks related to the workflow of creating a program
  • Represent MedSims with internal team members and / or external stakeholders


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of relevant simulation experience is required
  • Minimum 5+ years clinical experience (public health, pharmaceutical, or any clinical work environment)
  • 2+ year software  technical experience ( HTML/ XML)
  • Demonstrable and applicable knowledge of adult learning theory, instructional design, and competency assessment
  • Demonstrated experience with learning management systems and content development technologies, such as Adobe Captivate or Articulate
  • Self-starter and detail-oriented
  • Excellent MS Office skills (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbally)
  • Enjoys and has a proven ability for learning new technologies
  • Must be able to work in a dynamic and growing startup environment
  • Must possess polished interpersonal and verbal/written skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Up to 20% travel required
  • This is a full-time, in-office position, so candidate must live in commuting distance to Durham


  • Master’s degree in education/ instructional design
  • Web software startup experience
  • Knowledge of CME and models of physician behavior change
  • Knowledge of simulations, serious games
  • Background of working in or creating teaching materials for Medical, or other high-risk industries
  • Knowledge of The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) guidelines
  • Preferred recent employment or experience in instructional design, adult learning theory, and multimedia communications
