Medscape, a division of WebMD, develops and hosts physician portals and related mobile applications that make it easier for physicians and healthcare professionals to access clinical reference sources, stay abreast of the latest clinical information, learn about new treatment options, earn continuing medical education credits and communicate with peers.

Medscape Education is seeking an experienced medical writer to play a primary role in the development of grant proposals, which seek funding for continuing medical education (CME) programs. This is a field-based position (i.e., work from home).



Working within assigned therapeutic areas, the grant developer is responsible for all steps and interactions required to write and prepare proposals for submission within agreed focus, budget, and timeline. This work will meet the highest industry standards and be completed with minimal supervision. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:


  • Write clear and succinct needs assessments that provide evidence for identified clinical practice gaps, that follow recognized standards, and are supported by internal and external data
  • Use internal Medscape templates and proprietary tools to create proposals that tell a compelling story on the rationale, instructional intent, and value of the proposed educational solution in alignment with strategic objectives
  • Ensure that proposals adhere to rules of grammar, punctuation, and style
  • Participate in proposal initiation calls with internal stakeholders to obtain details and direction for proposal development, confirming timelines, clinical focus, educational tactics, and outcomes assessment plans
  • Deliver assignments according to specified timelines and quality standards
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of important clinical issues, relevant literature, clinical practice guidelines, approved therapeutic drugs and regimens, therapeutic pipelines, and key opinion leaders
  • Quickly acquire up-to-date knowledge of therapeutic area(s), as needed



  • Bachelor's degree in the life sciences, public health, clinical sciences, journalism, technical writing, or English; advanced degree in a medical or science-related specialty is a plus
  • 1 to 2 years’ experience in medical writing; work in the field of CME (medical education/communications, medical publishing, academic institution/hospital, or medical society) and previous grant writing are desirable
  • Demonstrated excellence in writing
  • Experience writing on multiple therapeutic areas is a differentiator
  • Attention to detail with high level of accuracy
  • Ability to work independently under moderate supervision
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills (these encompass verbal, written, and listening)
  • Ability to maintain friendly and productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders through clear articulation and an effective communication style
  • Flexible mindset and excellent time management and organizational skills to manage multiple projects and tasks in a highly deadline-driven environment, while taking into consideration stakeholders based across multiple time zones
  • Positive attitude, high energy, and willingness to accept varied assignments
  • Process oriented, able to find ways to improve existing processes and to learn and adapt to evolving processes
  • Excellent computer skills, which include working remotely on shared networks and cloud-based systems
  • Availability for limited travel (~10%) when face-to-face meetings resume (post‒COVID-19)


Preferred Skills:

  • Experience writing and/or editing content for clinicians or proposals for new business opportunities
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and external partners toward common objectives
  • Ability to incorporate data, visuals, and narrative into a compelling written story
  • High degree of proficiency using Microsoft Word; at least basic skill level in Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Experience using web-based data and document sharing sites, such as Salesforce, SharePoint Online, and Tableau
  • Experience using web-based project management tools, such as Workfront
