Paid Summer Internship – Seattle, WA

Vulcan Inc. has launched a strategic initiative in partnership with top-notch climate research institutions to build a novel global climate model running on leadership class high-performance computing systems. As the Global Climate Modeling Intern in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary team, you will make significant contributions by implementing a specific module, a so-called physical parametrization using a domain-specific language and compiler.

During your internship, you will learn about global climate modeling, software engineering practices (unit-testing, regression testing, continuous integration) and be able to deepen your Python skills.

Projects and Responsibilities

  • Understand the module of an existing climate model that you will implement from peer-reviewed publications
  • Develop and test a Python version of the code using a domain-specific language and compiler
  • Demonstrate and present your results to the team

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Undergraduate/Graduate student currently pursuing an engineering or science degree from an accredited institution
  • Software engineering / programming experience -- preferably in Python
  • Familiarity with working in a Unix command-line environment
  • Background in atmospheric modeling or computational science is an advantage
  • Must be a fast learner and motivated to work in a challenging environment
