Develops and executes creative marketing ideas to solve client challenges. Focuses on the visual side of the creative product, including design, layout, type, photography, color and overall visual esthetics. Collaborates with an ACD copy or senior/copywriter to generate ideas and create concepts and visual designs that are on strategy, on-brand and achieve client objectives. Acts as creative director on designated projects, leading art directors and copywriters and providing strategic direction and insightful feedback to improve the work. Successfully sells creative ideas and concepts to clients. Mentors and develops team members.


  • Evaluate assignments and help identify resources and expertise needed to complete projects
  • Collaborate with account and strategy leads to develop creative briefs
  • Lead creative kick-off meetings with account and strategy partners; provide direction to art directors and
    copywriters on roles, assignments/deliverables and timing; answer questions
  • Drive creative brainstorms
  • Provide input on concepting ideas based on knowledge of current trends, pop culture, and current and past
    design themes
  • Bring own ideas to meeting and share with team
  • Build upon other participants’ ideas
  • Constructively critique ideas discussed
  • Partner with an ACD copy or senior/copywriter to design and create agreed-upon concept per brainstorm meeting
  • Throughout all stages of the creative development process, oversee art director/copywriter teams, evaluating their
    work, providing constructive feedback, making suggestions, and proposing alternate ways of thinking to elevate he
    work; ensure the overall quality and strategic accuracy of the creative product prior to internal reviews and client
  • Create presentation boards and/or decks; effectively present/sell the creative concepts and thinking to the client
  • Work with production, directors, photographers, illustrators and/or editors throughout the production process to
    achieve the desired creative product as concepted
  • Troubleshoots when needed, developing unique and actionable solutions to creative challenges
  • Lead development of direct reports through mentorship, coaching and ongoing performance feedback and
    identification of learning opportunities
  • Enter time reports at minimum once a week and expense reports within 10 days of incurred expense
  • Approve time at minimum once a week and approves expenses within 2 days of receipt
  • Handle other duties as assigned by supervisor

Skills & Experience

  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite applications
  • Solid understanding of advertising and marketing principles
  • Functional knowledge of typography, layout and design principles
  • Knowledge of current trends, pop culture, current and past design themes
  • Comprehensive knowledge of client category, business, and objectives, and a clear understanding of key strategic issues impacting client’s business
  • Able to communicate clearly, thoroughly and succinctly both verbally and in writing; responds to comments, suggestions and criticisms in a constructive manner while maintaining the integrity of the creative idea; influences and/or persuades key stakeholders when necessary
  • Strong presentation skills; presents creative work, clearly explaining the assignment, creative strategy, creative idea and how it accomplishes the client’s objectives
  • Current knowledge and understanding of where and how people interact with media, including at home, on the go, while shopping, mobile, broadcast, print, event, etc.
  • Collaborates well with others, demonstrated by partnering with account, strategy and creative teams to successfully deliver work to clients
  • Anticipates potential problems and obstacles to project success, communicates concerns and develops solutions
  • Experience leading, managing and mentoring teams and providing actionable constructive feedback
  • 8+ years of experience as an art director, preferably in an agency or in-house creative department
