The VMLY&Rx Payer is a global healthcare consulting division of the larger VMLY&R network and associated with the VMLY&Rx division (focused on therapeutic healthcare innovations). We focus on our core Science to Value Transformation Consulting model – working with Medical Affairs, HEOR, Market Access, Clinical Development, Patient Engagement, Development and Regulatory teams within our client organizations –biopharmaceutical companies, medical devise and diagnostics industries and also healthcare services industries. In addition, we also provide strategic CMO consulting support to many of the medical communications, PR, creative agencies within the WPP network. 

We are looking for a Senior Director of Consulting. This role will need to provide exceptionally strong leadership as part of a team build and growth strategy. This role also involves very close collaboratively working with the team in London, Shanghai and New York, especially on global projects and those with a domestic (US or China) focus. 

The person will have overall responsibility for providing exceptional leadership in the development of the highest quality client experience. They will ensure a coordinated approach to the CMO’s model for science to value transformation consulting. They will recommend new and innovative approaches and directions to accomplish client’s Medical Affairs, HEOR, Access and Patient Engagement needs as part of the CMO’s consulting model while growing new and organic business.

In the last year, the CMO has delivered a variety of projects, ranging from early clinical development consulting in neurology, EMA/HTA consultations in rare diseases, diabetes real world evidence studies, HEOR model development, global advisory boards in many therapeutic areas and other projects across the following disease areas, Rare Diseases, Oncology, Hematology, Immunology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Transplantation, neurosciences, diabetes and infectious diseases.


  • Lead the CMO Consultancy to achieve annual business targets, focused on quality delivery, repeat business and growth from both depth and breadth of business.
  • Ensure all P&L metrics are managed closely through working with internal finance, project management and wider finance teams.
  • Ensure all billing and delivery metrics are in line with business plans and act quickly to address areas of concern.
  • Growth in business must be achieved via direct CMO (Cambridge) business development activities and through the global CMO and VMLY&R and WPP collaborative networks.
  • In partnership with other VMLY&R teams and WPP agencies, drive appropriate cross- functional partnerships, developing annual strategic plans and provide leadership and SME as required in cross team strategy support for clients
  • Be the expert and senior point person within the CMO / VMLY&R network for other agencies to engage to provide expert support and collaborative engagement for pitches, business development strategy and ultimately, the delivery high quality global and U.S consulting work product.
  • Partner with HR to ensure that the team is balanced to meet the needs of the clients and provide leadership in taking appropriate action to address issues arising from poor performance.
  • A dedicated and passionate focus on talent management and coaching and development., ensuring all team and individual’s goals and objectives are completed and implemented in a timely and comprehensive manner
  • Act as a talent magnet to attract top taken from across the industry into the CMO Team with a focus on growing the group size (to 20+ in 2 years) and collective competence
  • Lead on the training and coaching plan to ensure a sustained focus on capability building within the team, utilizing appropriate tools and tactics to execute smart and cost-efficient enhancement in the team’s skills and knowledge.
  • Generate advocacy, awareness and a presence for those seeking a career in the work of the CMO and drive new business leads
  • Ensure a comprehensive external perspective on the competitive Consulting space to identify opportunities to develop new tools, platforms and materials and also to identify future talents for the CMO
  • Overseeing all day-to-day activities of the CMO (Cambridge) and as part of the CMO and VMLY&R network ensuring the delivery of a high-quality product within specific deadlines and managing risk and issues effectively using experience leadership skills and experience.
  • Acting as team leader on specific accounts and projects as necessary to ensure integration of agency disciplines (strategic planning, project management)
  • A tight focus on monthly financial management of business and ensure all monthly reporting is accurate, comprehensive and communicated effectively.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Minimum of 10+ years of senior and progressive experience within the pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical market (industry and / or consulting) including Medical Affairs, Access, HEOR or drug development
  • Minimum of 5+ years leading team effectively in the delivery of high-quality consulting deliverables
  • Knowledge of HTA (NICE, ICER, and other systems), AMA, PhRMA and FDA regulations (e.g., FDAMA 141) associated with product promotion, HEOR and medical affairs activities and industry-supported scientific education activities
  • Knowledge and experience of a wide range of internal client compliance and copy approval processes
  • Strong understanding of the global market access landscape and the regulatory environment for pharmaceuticals/biopharmaceuticals
  • Ability to think and act strategically and to lead the translation of strategy into clearly communicated tactical implementation and to motivate teams of people to execute on strategy with a focus on self-appraisal and improvement
  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to achieve impact and influence with internal and external stakeholder
  • Consulting in a wide range of therapeutic areas
  • Global and regional (US) experience
  • Business development and Team leadership and Team builds
  • HTA and clinical development would be desirable
  • Real world data generation and development of HEOR research plans and communications
  • Delivery of HEOR / market access/ medical affairs consulting project experience
  • Commercial liaison with a variety of healthcare stakeholders
  • First degree in Biomedical sciences, Pharmacy, Medicine or related
  • Postgraduate desirable- MBA, PharmD, PhD in Health Economics, Policy, Clinical Sciences, Biomedical sciences, Data and Information
