WHAT IS THIS ROLE ABOUT? In the role of Principal AI Engineer, you will serve as the technical lead and strategic partner for AI development within the engineering team. You will be a key contributor to the company’s AI strategy, keeping abreast of emerging technologies and evolving educational market expectations around AI use and privacy considerations.

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:
1. Partner with technology leadership to define and drive the company’s AI roadmap, ensuring alignment with business goals
2. Design, build, and deploy large-scale AI models and systems that enhance core business capabilities, including recommendation engines, natural language processing, predictive analytics, and other ML-driven solutions
3. Stay current with industry developments
4. Work closely with software engineers and product managers to gather and prioritize business requirements, define technical solutions, and ensure seamless integration of AI capabilities across platforms
5. Lead efforts to transition machine learning models from research to production
6. Contribute to the design and development of robust AI pipelines
8. Ensure that AI models and systems comply with ethical guidelines, fairness, accountability, transparency, and privacy standards
9. Create and manage technical documentation
10. Work closely with the DevOps team to implement, automate and streamline ML operations and lifecycle
 
 
YOU MUST HAVE (MINIMUM REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE)
  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience working in software development, with at least 5 years focused on AI and Machine Learning engineering.
  • Engineering Acumen:  
    • Advanced knowledge of Ruby on Rails, or comparable MVC framework and willingness to learn RoR.  
    • Advanced knowledge of SQL, Unix command-line navigation, Git / Github.
    • Advanced knowledge of Python and related ML libraries.
    • Advanced knowledge of good SDLC practices to ensure high-quality deliverables and enable long term system maintainability.
    • Advanced knowledge of building and deploying mission critical applications in cloud environments (AWS or GCP) and advanced understanding of how to design solutions for scalability and performance.
  • AI Skills:
    • Deep understanding of AI algorithms, machine learning, and natural language processing (NLP). Experience deploying AI models in cloud environments (AWS, or Azure).
    • Expertise in handling large-scale data, including familiarity with data storage and processing solutions (e.g., Hadoop, Spark, Athena) and data engineering practices
  • Project Management Skills: Advanced project management skills with experience overseeing the delivery of AI projects from conception to production.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to organize technical documentation, extract technical needs from non-technical stakeholders, and articulate complex AI concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strategic Planning: Advanced ability to align AI initiatives with business strategies and a well-developed ability to identify emerging trends and technologies in AI and assess their business relevance.
  • Product & Market Knowledge:
    • Well-developed understanding of language education content production and delivery systems.
    • Solid understanding of K12 and HE instructor and student course delivery systems and user workflows.
 
IDEAL IF YOU HAVE or ARE (PREFERRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE)
  • A Master’s or Ph.D. in AI/ML or Data Science (preferred)
 
LOCATION: Boston/Remote Hybrid
Ideal candidate will be located within close proximity to our Boston office location and be willing to work a Hybrid schedule. Fully remote candidates may be considered. Relocation assistance is not available. Position requires current residence within the United States of America.
