THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Director of Taxation, this role is responsible for managing the organization’s expanding tax compliance obligations across both the Canadian Corporate and Family Office levels. The successful candidate will stay current with evolving tax legislation and serve as a key liaison between the Tax team, internal accounting groups, and external professional firms. This individual will provide oversight and guidance to ensure tax filings and related obligations are completed accurately and on time. The position offers an excellent opportunity to deepen expertise across a broad range of Canadian tax areas while contributing to internal knowledge sharing and the continuous improvement of tax compliance processes.
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage Canadian tax compliance work processes
- Responsible for important tax compliance tasks including engagement work planning, managing information gathering & submissions, monitoring/tracking of work progress & due dates, reviewing of deliverables & notices/assessments, managing tax payments, and management of external professional firms
- Work in close liaison with our Corporate Reporting and Family Office teams and various external professional firms on day-to-day tax compliance matters, and build effective working relationships
- Maintain proactive communication with other internal teams on new and important transactions/events that are relevant to our business operations, participate in the planning/designing of such transactions/events to the extent it is relevant for tax purposes, and identify and keep track of issues with potential tax implications and ensure they get resolved and/or reflected in tax filings properly
- Research and stay up to date on new and important developments in relevant tax legislation
- Handle high-impact tasks such as ad hoc tax research, tax questions from business teams, transaction reviews, and tax audits/reviews/information requests from tax authorities
- Maintain necessary tax related documentation
CANDIDATE PROFILE
- 8+ years of strong practical and progressive experience in Canadian tax compliance
- Strong practical experience in working with external parties including professional firms and tax authorities
- Solid tax research skills and ability to identify tax issues and see them through to resolution
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, specifically Excel
- Detail oriented with excellent organization and communication skills, and ability to effectively manage work under tight timelines and changing priorities
- Strong team leadership skills and ability to supervise and train junior team members
- An open-minded inter-departmental collaborator
- Aptitude to leverage technology to gain efficiencies and improve processes
- CPA designation is preferred
