Employment Type: Part-time position, not to exceed 10 hours of work per week. This is a 12-month position starting in the 2024-2054 school year. 

Compensation: $20 per hour

The Family Engagement Coordinator will strategically ensure that Valor maintains a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive environment that encourages Black/African American families to be an integral part of the learning and community-building process. Working alongside the broader Family Engagement Team, which includes the Family Engagement Coordinator for MENA families and Family Engagement Coordinator for Latino families, this individual will primarily be responsible for engaging, mobilizing, and communicating with our Black/African American family base, ensuring that families play an active role in our school community. The two primary areas of responsibility for this position are family engagement and family communication.

Core Responsibilities:

Family Engagement 

  • Advise School Principals and other school leaders on issues of strategy and operations related to Black/African American family engagement. 
  • Attend one to two, one-hour Q&A with Leadership meetings per month (weekdays 7:45 - 8:45am). 
  • Attend four, two-hour FAC Core Leadership meetings (in the evenings) per year. 
  • Attend additional meetings with leadership as needed
  • Identify, implement and monitor opportunities and programs to foster effective family engagement in the Black/African American family community. 
  • Serve as a member of the Family Advisory Council (FAC) Core committee
    • Support and attend FAC meetings, family trainings, engagement opportunities, and events
    • Assist FAC and Affinity group leaders in planning and executing cultural festivals and events (Black History Month Celebration, Diversity Festivals, etc.)
    • Organize and support a parent-run affinity group (Black/African American Family Group). Serve as a liaison between this group and the faculty. 
  • Identify and train parent/guardian ambassadors & advocacy efforts
    • Empower diverse families to take leadership roles on the FAC and other engagement opportunities
    • Provide guidance and available resources to Ambassadors regarding leadership development, advocacy, and on-site school support 
  • Provide family professional development opportunities by hosting “listening sessions” with the leadership from their affinity group to gain a deeper understanding of the strengths, needs and desires of these groups.
  • Attend staff circle weekly on Wednesdays at 3:30pm. 

Family Communication 

  • Lead, organize, coordinate events with the Family Affinity Group
  • Ensure that family communication is equitable and inclusive for their Black/African American families.
  • Prepare and share communication with families around student recruitment and enrollment, particularly in the fall semester during school tours and lottery process.
  • Share communication on ValorFamilyNews.com and the parent groups at-large around key events and updates

Key Qualifications and Experiences:

  • Must have a flexible schedule as family events and meetings can happen at various times and days of the week.
  • Demonstrate strength in building trusting relationships with a broad range of multicultural stakeholders, specifically with Black/African American families. 
  • Familiarity with computer usage and working knowledge of tech platforms such as Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Wordpress, etc.
  • Passion and commitment to serve an ethnically & economically diverse family/student body.
  • Ability to model, live, and reinforce Valor’s core values, mission, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. 
  • Strong relational skills and ability to connect and collaborate with a diverse community. 
  • Strong project management skills with ability to design, plan, and execute on projects related to family engagement.
